I could suggest taking classes to prepare for the PHR certification exam. Even if you elect not to take the exam (which would also be a great feather in your cap), the classes are very helpful.

I agree with that- a sense of humor is a highly desired trait!

In order to excel in HR- I would suggest

Employee Relations

If you do not have a Masters then I would pad your resume with a PHR/SPHR. It will let employers know that you are committed to being an HR professional.

I would agree that a sense of humor is a must....I would add flexibility. I know, I know some fellow HR professionals just cringed. Yes, we do have to ensure that we are consistent, but let's be real LIFE IS INCONSISTENT. HR Generalists have to know how to make a YES out of the "you have got to be kidding me" requests from management.

I am a huge supporter of the SHRM certifications. Start with the Generlaist Certificate program (3 day Workshop) if you are not ready to take the PHR/SPHR plunge.
