Do you have any tips to help prepare for an upcoming help desk specialist interview?

Are there common interview questions that come up again and again?

1 question that comes up again and again is: How would you deal with someone who demands help when your shift is ending or how have you dealt with a difficult client/customer in the past? (Kind of a customer service skills question....)

I would say that actual technical knowledge is 1/2 of the job and the other 1/2 is basic communication skills (the stereotype of the IT or Tech Support guy is one of a socially inept geek!) For fun, check out the "IT Crowd" tv show.

This is a question we always used when interviewing candidates for our help desk positions ~ ~ What basic questions or steps do you always use when troubleshooting? ~ ~ What we were looking for were the logical processes used to make determinations as to the nature of the problem. We wanted to make sure that the problem was being investigated from the individual level (the person calling with the problem) and then progressively eliminating things to expand the scope of the problem to the macro level.
