I have had some wonderful insight as far as the comments expressed at this cite. I fell soooo grieved at the personal experiences shared by all of you! I was thinking of obtaining my CNA liscence, but after hearing of your experiences, I am no longer considering this field for my occupation. I wish ALL of you the best. Stay strong and committed! |

Wow! After reading all of this I know that being a CNA can't possibly be for the money otherwise some of you may have quit a long time ago. I am starting a CNA class next week and despite all of the bad experiences I am still excited. Of course I am not doing it for the money. I want a job that will provide a good living and is rewarding at the same time. I LOVE people and I love taking care of people. If this is not what you love to do being a CNA is not for you. I know that they don't get paid much, but this is just a stepping stone for me. I am going to be an RN then a Nurse Practitioner. Don't stop here CNA's... go further! Best wishes. |

My base rate is $8.00 an hour, I am a CNA at a nursing home and we all know that there are not enough of us that care about these patients. I have had 21 patients in one shift because of the other CNAs i work with call out when they have a section they don't like. And I also believe we should get paid more than doctors, sure they have to break the news to the patients that they are dieing but who is the person that is by their side, taking care of them, and holding their hand as they go. That's where the real work is. |

frustrated in Lowell, Massachusetts said: Why are some cna's disrespectful and try to make your day miserable when you are a new cna. They don't like it that you were assigned to your floor because you are new, or so it seems. They bark at you all day long. I put up with this all day on my first day, and just stayed pleasant to this person. These older (older-more experienced) cna's are unaproachable, and when I do ask a question, I get barked back at me like I have a nerve to even ask. I'm not doing this for a hobby. I need the job and also thought I would love working with older people. I didn't know the people who you work with could be so disrespectful to people. They are like lightbulbs. They are nice one minute and all smiley the next, ask a question and they turn into a scorpion, next minute a purring kitten. Next minute the same cycle all day long. What will day 2 bring? that's how you can tell the CNAs that care from the CNAs that just do it for the money, I hate it when people I work with do that. Especially nurses they can be the worst sometimes. |

Try working as a CNA in a nursing home with 50 residents to take care of for min wage.Oklahoma is like that.Look at teacher pay, nurse pay.Human care is seen as no better than fast food worker.Society feels we should do this without pay, just to be good people. |

Hi All, I'm in a training class now I love my teacher cause she keeps it real for us. I have done a lot of research and found the most this job pays in Sacramento is about $8.00 to $12.00 dollars an hour. And ya it's a lot of dumping urine and feces and giving baths but I want to help seniors but don't get me wrong it would be nice to make more money. So I'm keeping my options open and will try Agencies and private home care don't forget about Assisted Living, there are other avenues c.n.a.s can do. And most of you are right the nurse's do treat you bad and some don't offer any assistance but I believe if you do your job and keep your nose clean you will eventually - hopefully get noticed and advance. More money well I don't know about all that but I'm going to jump in and give it a Try..Good luck to all my brothers and sisters out there we all need it. :) |

I just don't understand? when the agency gets $24.50hr. out of and i get only $10.00 when I'm the one that is busting my chops taking good care of the one that has health issue. there should be someone out there that can voice for all these wonderful people hard worker. and saved them from critters that are making easy money from us. this is no different than hiring someone that is illegal! slavery. |

Think about CEO making millions while the worker bees make min wage. That is why the poor get poorer and the rich get richer. The government gets paid millions from lobbyist. This is not a socialist country so that is what we get. |

I have to say I'm pretty appalled at the lack of proper grammar/spelling/punctuation by people on this forum. Just because it's the internet doesn't mean you have to present yourselves as uneducated morons . . . unless of course, that's what you are. Which is probably why you're making slave wages. Learn some proper English and you might make a decent wage someday. |

Pay has always been low in this field and in most people care related fields.Look at daycare workers and teachers. With the government falling apart it won't be long till the elderly are dumped out into the street and nursing homes closed. So work self pay places or look for another job. This is not a paying job,it is a job we do because we care. |

Is that a decent rate for a new CNA working in hospice care? Yes it is I worked in home care for 11 yrs. now about 2 yrs. ago I worked with hospice going as aide into homes. I made 10.40 an hr. and had to drive all around a couple counties some just got an hr. I work at one agency for 9.25 after a yr. and another for 8.00 started and no raises for a yr. After a 11 yrs of experience that's crazy. I started out 11 yrs. ago at 7.50 an hr. I got certified as a nurse aide but didn't want to work in facilities and went straight into home care. Hours are never guaranteed. I now work for two agencies and next wk. will only get 26 hrs. I have the only income coming into the house. Best of luck to you |

Iam a CNA and experience for 18yrs and I only get pay 13.00 pool, and full time 10per hour and to many patients and other duties to do. I think CNA's should get pay at 18per hour. Guess what it is getting worse. In some states with a one day med class you get most of the duties of a nurse at CNA pay.You do the med cart, count meds and give them to residents. If you miscount, lose a pill or any other mistake you could lose your license or go to jail.So now you have all the dutys of a CNA,plus of a nurse.Corporations got smart and lobbied their state for this change to save money. In the end there could be a big fallout if a big mistake happens and harm comes to a resident. We had seperate jobs for a reason.Could nurses be on their way out ? Like what massage envy did to the massage business.Cheap massages and low paid workers. What is your opinion on this?Has anyone experienced this yet? |

The majority of CNA's are CNA's because they aren't capable of being nurses. If you had a brain, you would continue your education, not stop once you are a CNA. I have never met a CNA that cared about the people they were taking care of. CNA's do as little as possible while at work. If you really cared, you wouldn't leave dirty diapers on people until they develop rashes! Don't complain and say you are watching over 15 patients by yourself. How much time do you stand around doing nothing when you could be checking on them. Time management will make your job easier, and then maybe you would be able to take care of 15 patients without complaining! |

To the person that thinks CNA's are lazy do nothings: We are always understaffed and need to be two cna's working in unison for every total care 12 residents,15 for residents that can walk.I worked one government paid nursing home that had 1 CNA for 50 residents.People were in dirty depends for 5 hours, because I couldn't get to them.It is greed and corporate owned NH that make them so bad.The federal government doesn't have any regulations to cna ratio. Most states don't either, plus some states the cna's also do the nurses job of pill pushing. |

CNAS should take their time and go back to school become nurses go back and work with those same rude nurses and show them that people are people and we can all be the same. Get one back on them and in the mean time move up the pay scale. |
|
kat in Minneapolis, Minnesota 9 months ago |
I fear nursing jobs will become few if more states do what minnesota did ? A one day med class and a cna can do a nurses job.Work the med cart.Count and pass pills.Test blood sugar.Get insulan pen ready. It is much cheaper to pay a $11 cna than a $20 nurse and get two jobs done for the lower price of one. |

I am a CNA in a hospital and i started off at 11.51 and thats with being a brand new CNA with n o experience. I work nights so i make an additional 1.25. i actually took a paycut when i took this job but i wanted to do something different. i absolutely love what i do and i especially love the Nurses i work with(very, very helpful). I dont take anymore than about 6 or 7 patients and the nurses do not treat me any different because i am a CNA, i wouldnt let them if they tried. i am starting to regret my decision only because of my pay. I am thinking of going back to my old job but it would definitely only be because of the money. |

We start new CNA's at 10.32 but we pay up to 18 depending on what experience and skills you bring to the table. Just working as a CNA doesn't cut it. You have to have quantifiable skills. Become a restorative aide, get your med tech/QMA/whatever they call it where you are, learn how to do staffing, learn computer skills, get every certificate you can. We have one CNA that pretty much has all of that and has been a CNA for 3 years and gets 18. We have others that have done nothing but CNA for upwards of 10 that get paid around 13-14... You have to bring something to the table because frankly, CNA's are a dime a dozen. Even when I was a CNA... |

What is really sad is a CNA is very important. It isn't about how many degrees you have and how smart you are.We need PEOPLE care.Wipe butts, bath, feed, talk to the elderly, make them smile, but we are still considered unimportant. We don't have time for passing pills, cooking and serving the food, charting for 4 hours a day.Our people care takes up all our time. Now that cheap corporate expecst us to do 4 jobs in the same amount of time,PEOPLE care suffers. We no longer have time to talk to our residents.Corporate says they are just machine parts on a conveyer belt and they don't need to be treated like human beings with slow, gentle, tender care. Our sick and elderly are considered a drain on the government and a profit machine to corporate.Just feed them cheap, small meals.Give them a small bed in a small room with a roommate and that is all they should expect in life.It is time to bring down and make corporations illegal.Respect life.Treat with gentle kindness. Our job is the most important job in the world,HUMAN CARE by humans, not machines. |

A person can be gifted and have compasion for the sick but we work hard and we deserve better. working for 18yrs as a cna in long term care, no one realize how hard cna's work for so little and we dont get much respect about what we do for the residents and more. I feel the same , i feel bad saying this but i feel low doing this job esp at the pay rate!We do so much and have a big responsability. Dont get me wrong those residents and patients need good care and we do just that but we do deserve better and some do do it for the money cause most cnas are from the other countrys they mae it a job and from what i see dont care!!! |

I'm looking to start a CNA course, i've already had some experience so i know what i am getting into and the pay, thats why i want to further my education, it will be helpful and beneficial in the long run! yes i agree though cna's deserve better but no one is stoping you to climb the latter and make more, if thats what you desire. |

MA's do way more than CNA's, before I was even an MA I was a med tech in long term care and I trained CNA's and we have to go to 10 months of school where as CNA's go to 6 weeks. We do everthing an LPN does and people are getting paid freakin $8-$10 an hour out here, Even with my years of experience I only get $14!!! so I wouldnt complain about $13 far more experienced and educated individuals are making less than you are AZ SUCKS!!!! |

Here in Missouri we have absolutely wonderful aides very dedicated and caring for our residents. (That really dont care about the pay!Its the team work and satisfaction they get.)Then we have those one or two that are here for the paycheck. Even as small as it is, they are always the ones that always call in, or do the most griping, they never offer to stay over to help the next shift. Never want to try to help to solve problems because then they wouldnt have anything to gripe about. OR how about the CNA's that you spend all the time training and the background check costs about $300 then they just NCNS. So we work short because no one else will come in. The nurses and CMT's pitch in to help. But it puts a strain on every one here NOT just the CNA's. The government cutting all the Medicaid and Medicare will make it worse, too. Thats where our raises come from. Sorry to complain, just got to get it out. |

I work in home health and i only make 8 an hr. I work 7days a week and at the most i make 200.00 a week. and that's it. I use all the money they pay me to pay for the gas to get to each client. They gas reinburstment is not worth it. I spent the time to go to school to become a cna and have other training experience and to only see 8.00 an hr is like a big slap accross the face. And now that im sick as A dog, i still dont even get a day off. if you ask for time off because your sick, you get to hear, o maybe you need a diet change. well last time i checked, diet changes doesnt always get rid of bronchitis or pnumonia. I'm on the hunt for a better job. |

When the economy recovers americans will realize this is a underpaid and understaffed job, that people can't live on.Some places are bringing in staff from 3rd world countrys. They live 5 to 10 people in an apt and are happy to make $8 a hour or less.Minoritys and people from other countrys are the new slave labor.Elderly are considered throw away people, just like the poor. The government is cutting the amount they give nursing homes,so staffing and pay will remain in bad shape.I am out of the bizz, not a job I can afford, mentally, physically or money wise. |
