it's a longer haul from helper to painter in industrial painting. there are a lot who do it, but not many who do it right. just look at the jobs done in most industrial facilities. it is much more physicaly demanding, if you are doing it right. get in shape, you'll stand a better chance of sticking around long enough to learn what you are doing.
1. learn your coatings, where to apply what paint. and how not to paint what you are not getting paid for. clean up costs you money.
2. learn your equiptment. and how to use it in congested places.
3. learn to think in 3D, your best laid plans will always be interfered with. learn how to stay bussy making progress with other onsite projects when other trades and activities at a plant are in your way.

I've been in paint since 1980, all phases. It has amazed me just how much painting is like life in general, how many aspects of the trade can be applied to personal life knowledge and experiences, and the other way around.. Having come this far, however far any may think that is, for me I have learned my truth, I am my mothers son, and I am a Painter.
I have rethought my original response to the question, what I realy think is not so directly responsive to the question as it is to the intent, it applies to branches of painting, and life.
1. Always be willing to learn, from helper through master. There will always be those that have more experience than you, seek them out, ask, and listen. If you can grasp this, you will walk with men and not in there shadows.
