When your are using same code and logic in many mappings as well as to populate columns in the table.Its is preferrable to create Mapplet with input and output transformation information.

simple example is lookup logic to check and validate...with required conditions...

Below listed transformation can not be used in mapplets are

Normalizer transformations
COBOL sources
XML Source Qualifier transformations
XML sources
Target definitions
Other mapplets

If you want to process stored procesude logic thru the mapping than you can use procedure type as NORMAL.
