What is the best training for becoming a hirable instructional designer? What types of ongoing training or certifications are necessary to be an effective instructional designer?

What do non-traditional career paths look like?

I can comment on the non-traditional paths. I started out as a fine artist that self-trained in 3d animation, wrote a book, and was invited to do technical writing for the instructional design department of the company that made the 3d software I wrote about. I didn't go into ID right away - I went back to teaching 3d animation and freelance medical 3d - but then I got a job as an ID at a 3d medical animation company and that led directly to a job as an ID at K-12 online educational company. I expect to have 3d assignments from time to time as well.
