I am a recent graduate in interior design. I still have to do my two years of work to get my license. I have to do a portfollio for a job and I cant state that I am an interior designer because it is illegal so does any body have any idea of the best job title.

Hi there,
Your condition is very similar to mine, I earned my degree 10 years ago in interior architecture, however I do not have a portfolio because there was a lack of jobs in my home country, now living in the US I realized that be best way to acquire experience is through an internship, try to research the best firms of the country and bug them until they give you a chance. I am doing it, and I began creating a portfolio because it is obvious that they want to see what I have in my mind. I hope this can help you. Good luck in your search!

Hi there,
Yes, I think that works too! But I do not get it yet, why is it illegal to say that you are an interior designer if you already earnt your degree? I would say you can say you are an the entry level interior designer.

IN THE STATE OF TEXAS THERE IS A LAW THAT IS CALLED THE TITLE ACT. YOU CAN NOT SAY YOU ARE AN INTERIOR DESIGNER UNTIL YOU SIT FOR THE NCIDQ AND COMPLETE ALL OF YOUR EDUCATIONAL REQUIREMENTS WHICH INCLUDE YOUR HOURS OF EXPERIENCE. THANKS FOR THE HELP.

You might say interior design or interior design consultant.

Are you a member of A.S.I.D?(American Society of Interior Designers)They are
a great and very helpful organization. They have a great web page asid.org.
Without being certified you might be able to say (depending on your state laws) ASID, Allied Member

Are you registered with www.asid.org?
You can also include in your portfolio photos of your non-commercial projects. E.g. If you designed your home, or home for your parents, you can safely include that.

I would say that you can include the portions of projects you worked on with the understanding that you state in your portfolio this work was done under the direction of "this company." There is a fine line in showing your talents to others and taking responsibility for the firms accomplishments and abilities.
Another idea is to duplicate work after hours while not at work.
The basic concern as I understand it is that you are not taking credit for work you did not partake in and that you are spending company time and resources augmenting your portfolio.

My job title has been Junior Designer or Design Associate. Try not to put "Interior Design" in your job title in the state of Texas. It's not something you can put unless you are licensed...annoying, I know.
