What is the best training for becoming an Investment Analyst? What types of ongoing training or certifications are necessary to be an effective Investment Analyst?

What do non-traditional career paths look like?

Please research the Chartered Financial Analyst program (CFA). You should also look into a Master of Business Administration (MBA) with a finance concentration.

When employeed in the investment industry in most developed countries your on-going training will focus on Ethics.

To be an effective investment analyst...the obvious skill is numeracy. The often overlooked but valuable skill is communication...public speaking, writting.

A non-traditional career path that I've seen is going from sales to analyst and engineer to analyst.
