I had a neighbor several years ago who was a school janitor in our district who was fired for calling a teacher who threw half full coffee cups into a small trash can in her room, an "idiot". The woman teacher taught science and the class was actually a lab class with about six sinks in the room that she could've poured the coffee into from her cup before throwing it out but no, she's educated right? and proceeds to throw the half filled cups of coffee into the small wastebasket they provide each room. My neighbor tired of cleaning up the teacher genius mess everyday and told her nicely several times about just pouring the coffee down the drain in one of the six sinks only 10 ft away from her desk, then throwing out the empty cup, but she continued throwing the coffee into the can for like 2 weeks.

OMG! Let me just tell you that the teachers believe they are better people than just about anyone. I would have told that woman she was an idiot too. Mine throw textbooks and workbooks by the stack in there, not that I can't pick it up, but come on, the bags just rip away. We have a separate trailer for boxes outside and I have repeatedly asked them to not throw in a trash can because I have to pick it out of the trash, they still do. There really are so many things that piss me off around here. One thing that helps is that several call me superwoman, so at least I know they know I do a helluva lot around here. Calling me right now...

I used to work for a school district over here in southern California several years ago. I went through simular situations as you all. I recently had to move back from Alabama to California to help my mom out. I have no job to go to now. I long for those irritating teachers now, so please enjoy your job the best way you can. I know janitoral work is looked upon by many as a down grade job,but know that you are worth a million in gold. Happy Holidays

I tremendously enjoy the physical work. It enables me to keep fit and agile without spending precious time and money working out in a gym. I do engage in supplementary exercise activities related to my specific needs, but for general stamina and liveliness, I keep young with nice, long hours of large-muscle movement. Even sports like badminton would eventually become boring to me, but the challenge of completing routine dutiesbefore the shift ends, as well as meeting unforseen emergencies, makes my work continuously dramatic and rewarding. The only other job I've had that was equally health-building was my role as a Letter Carrier.

If you are a janitor, you are considered SCUM OF THE EARTH. Last year I filed a tax return earning $369,000...personal tax return.

At night, when I am working with the crews, the night stalkers (stockers) still look down on me like I am white trash.

I LOVE IT!

Bernie Madhoff made even more than that, but I still consider him scum "white" trash. How much you make is not a very good indicator of your character, in my opinion.

The results we produce from our work ethic, and the kind of life we lead are far more revealing about our true character and whether we actually are the scum trash of the earth.

It makes me proud when the stockers, Grocery Manager, warehouse guy, Store Director, and customers seek me out and tell me how great the facility looks when I'm done with a job. Compliments for a job well done elevate even the lowliest of us and motivate us to do our work in a professional, workman-like manner from job to job, insure our continued employment, and earn us the reputation of being a preferred, high quality service provider.

I'm in this business for the long haul...since 1987. Having an impeccable reputation is the most important aspect of the business to me.

I, like I know in my heart almost every reader on this blog, could do anything else I wanted. The only person that forces me to work somewhere is me. If someone is burned out and costing the rest of us our good reputation through their inferior work, why not move on so the rest of us can enjoy the good reputation we have earned.

We are professional janitors!

I teach my crews to reward themselves, with their own pat on the backs.

If it takes someone else giving you a compliment to allow you or help you feel pride and proud about your efforts, then you still got some learning-growing to do.

I could care less about what the stockers, checkouts people, managers or district managers or customers think about the work my company does.

Hearing a compliment simply goes in one ear and right out the other.

The manager that loves you today might despise you next week. You have no control over that. If you haven't experienced that in this business, then you still have more growing to do.

Our standards are so much higher than the customers, if my guys know they did the job they are paid to do, then that is all that is needed.

We pat ourselves on our own backs here IF we know we did the job we were paid to do. That is our ultimate judge...our own inner self.

TO hell with what anyone else thinks.

This isn't arrogance. This is simply knowing you are the best because you demand the best from those you pay and accept nothing less. When you work in this business from this mindset, your employees have no choice but to deliver and then they can pat themselves on the back or butt all the way to the bank.

As for the money end...

I never grew up wanting to be a janitor. So I am in this business for the money. Not because I LOVE CLEANING DIRT.

Take Care

Well, I stumbled upon this and decided to pitch in, I wouldn't go as far as calling myself a janitor, I clean a parking lot and I guess you could say do maintenance in it as well, change light bulbs, pressure wash the sidewalks, change garbage bags, pull weeds, it is two of us doing this and we are not supervised we are our own supervisors if you will, I am 23, been doing it for three years and the other gentleman is 71 and been doing it for a longer time than I have, there is a major grocery store, 12 smaller units (R2own place, check cashing, dollar store) and a national chain pharmacy.

From this job the thing that I learn the most is that you would never know what happens outside in a street or parking lot until you stop and look around you, and if you have a broom and dust pan then you might as well be invisible, people will look down on you no matter what, keep hearing the constant "central car locking system" noise every time I pass by a car, the grocery store employees treat us like trash, we have a bad drug problem in this town and the pharmacy has left their doors unlocked, we called the police and then the manager of the store ripped our behind one end down the other because we had waked her up at 2am because the store was unlocked "we have an alarm, if someone is robbing the place it will call us" she said, same thing with the grocery store that was left unlocked, the sliding doors just opened up at 3am when I passed in front of them, called manager, someone came out, closed them, no thank you kiss my behind goodbye nothing from this man and he was a district manager.

I don't believe I am rude to people, anyone treats us both like we are garbage and then they get mad if we tell them anything back, as far as the job is concerned, I LOVED IT, I don't make that much money from it, but it is a good job, there is nothing wrong or undignified about cleaning up the streets other people walk on, it gives me pleasure to walk out of the parking lot and it be clean.

I am a maintenace employee at chester ny shoprite.I feel Degraded much of the time. Also,i am overworked and abused to a substaintial degree.I feel that my job only requires a third of the i.q i possess. It is very frustrating knowing that the other employees of the store and most of the customers think i'm nothing but an ape brained janitor. This is the only position that was offered to me when i applied back in november of 09 and i could'nt just turn it down at that time because i was so anxious, eager and needy of immediete employment. That is just life. Some of us just have to grab whatever we can get thats available to us for making a living.

Five years ago I quit 14 year high stress management position in long term care and went to work as a school janitor. I have never been happier. The physical labor involved in the job keeps me in shape and the stress free nature of the job is great! I'm healthier than I've been in years. The pay is not as good but the personal gains are tremendous.

I work in Canada as a elementary school Caretaker (our fancy word for Janitor :p) . I'm 28, been doing it for 8 years now. I have full benefits, sick days, am paid well and will receive a full pension (should I retire from this job). I don't mind the work but I'm at the point where I'm questioning if this is what I want to do. Every day is the same damn thing plus the hours are pretty lonely and don't leave much room for a social life, I work 3-11pm. I didn't go to college so I am grateful to have this job but sometimes I think I'd rather take a huge pay cut and work at a book store or something haha, anywhere more fulfilling! Am I being a huge baby or does anyone feel the same??

That sounds like a pretty nice gig you have. 3-11 are good hours actually,at least imo. I work the hours of 4pm till 10-10:30pm 6 days per week in a grocery store.Degradation aside,The job is quite lame and the working conditions are overall quite a pain in the butt many times. It is a major drag and a half. The time crawls too much, especially the last 2 - 2-1/2 hours. They play the same list of songs every single day in that place.

All in all,the job is a combination of boring, stressfull, aggravating, and frustrating for the most part. They dont allow usage of an ipod because then supposadly,i wont hear them paging me for some cleanup, even though i actually WOULD HEAR IT because i'd only be wearing one earphone.

The dresscode is very lame as well.Red polo shirt everyday. No shorts allowed either so thats always something that becomes a dreadfull issue during the summer when i'm always going into that suanalike bottle room to service the machines crowded up with sweaty smelly people.I would trade jobs with you anytime.I only stay at my job because it pays the rent and such and its only slightly over a mile away from my current residence.
