I got my MLS in 1998 and couldn't find a job when I returned to my home state after graduation. So I have no experience except for working in the college library and volunteering in the children's reading room at the library in my graduate school town. I want to get into Young Adult/Children's librarianship, but I didn't take anycourse for this area. So what I think I should do now is 1. volunteer at my children's elementary school as library helper, and volunteer at local library and keeping reading all the young adult (what joy!) and children's literature I can. What do you think about creating a website of my readings/reviews? Im trying to think of anything that will make me more marketable when I return to library field. Since I could not find a job in a public library when I graduated, I worked for 5 years in customer service. Any insights, recommendations, would be appreciated. And I apologize for editing or spelling errors. I do not want to offend anyone! |

I would do the volunteering but also do some webinars to catch up on the technology side of librarianship too. |

An update, I am now volunteering at Head Start facility reading to kids one on one. I am going to ask if I can also do some group story time. I am also volunteering at a environmental non-profit doing to some archival work. I wonder what other volunteer opportunities should I take on where I can show I can programming/planning, literacy skills that are needed for a children's librarian? Any thoughts? I also hear that I need to learn about gaming? Any ideas would be appreciated! |

It was an outreach job where the librarian would assist homeless/g/l/low income youth with books and provide outreach to other organizations with a need to help youth. I didn't get the position, however, which I could feel that they were not receptive to me. I did try to explain my enthusiasm and passion for reading but since I don't have any experience beyond working as library assistant during college/high school, I think they didn't think much of me. I think they thought that I should be brimming with ideas and I should have better prepared. I have learned a good lesson and will focus my energies elsewhere. Thanks for listening. |

I have applied to numerous part-time library jobs and not selected. I have a library science degree from Kent State University. Where do all these people come from willing to work part-time with a graduate degree. |
