At my city (Austin,TX), the community college is offering an MRI certification program, but it's exclusive to those certified with the AART. Is it possible to take the AART Radiography exam without taking any courses to get certified and then take the MRI certificate course?

I've heard pharmacy students take the pharmacy tech test just to get pharmacy experience without ever taking the on site experience courses.

Hi,

It's ARRT for starters. To take the ARRT exam you must go through an accredited program and become a registered radiologic technologist, which involves many hours of clinical experience. So no, you cannot just skip ahead and take the ARRT exam...you'd never pass it anyways without the experience and education.

The pharmacy tech thing is true...I did that too. This may be changing in the future though.

Sorry, as far as I know all x-ray programs are full-time commitments. Part-time and on-line really don't seem like feasable options to me because there is a lot to learn and you have to have so many hours of clinical experience (which is hands on, in the field) to take the exam. I doubt you will find anything like that anywhere. Good luck to you with whatever you do.

JRCERT is an organization that works with the ARRT to accredit radiography programs. If a radiography program is not JRCERT don't do it it will suck your money and you can't sit for the ARRT test. Plus the job market is bad not so choose all your options wisely.

JRCERT (Joint Review Committee on Education in Radiologic Technology) is the only agency recognized by the United States Department of Education for the accreditation of education in radiography, radiation therapy, MRI and dosimetry.

ARRT (American Registry of Radiologic Technologists)is the agency responsible for certifying imaging professionals - radiographers, radiation therapists, MRI technologists.

In order for a student to become eligible to take the national certification exam provided by the ARRT, they must first graduate from a program that has been accredited by: (info provided on the ARRT website)
- the JRCERT
- the JRCNMT (Joint Review Committee on Educational Programs in Nuclear Medicine Technology)
- Committee on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP) in collaboration with the Joint Review Committee on Education in Diagnostic Medical Sonography (JRC-DMS)
- Regional Institutional Accrediting Agencies (degree-granting divisions)
- Conjoint Accreditation Services of the Canadian Medical Association
- Australian Institute of Radiography

To discover if a program you're considering has been approved by the ARRT, see the Education/Primary Certification section of their website. There is a list of programs listed alphabetically by state. (There are 3 programs listed in Memphis, none of them called "high tech institute "
