What is the best training for becoming a maintenance manager? What types of ongoing training or certifications are necessary to be an effective maintenance manager?

What do non-traditional career paths look like?

I would like to know the answer to this question myself. What can I do to make myself more attractive to prespective employers. I have my Associate degree in computer maintenance, and the fall semester I will take HVAC courses so I can obtain HVAC certification. What else can I do?

I have found that employers want someone who can work with and within budgets. Become fimilar with declining budget programs. Also learn how to aquire contracts and negotiate them.

It is great that you have some school background and it will help you. Remember that experience also is priceless. Hopefully you are already working for a contractor full or part-time. Good Luck! RGB

You're on the right track. The most important thing you can do is expose yourself to people in the business thru workshops, trade shows, etc. In any career it's is all about WHO you know not what you know! I received my electronics diploma in 1989 and started going to graphic arts events to get to know people in the offset printing business. I landed a career with a Japanese co. that made printing presses. This was thru a guy I met at a trade show who was the service manager for the East coast. Eighteen years later I became a Maintenance Manager for a printing company who bought one of these presses. It's all about who you get to know!

Most Maintenance Managers have gained credentials through education, certifications, experience, and contacts. A Maintenance Manager that has a high level education such as Associates or Bachelors degree, will have more employers open door, since they show the employer the aptitude they could learn systems quickly. Managing and directing people is not easy and takes time and experience to become a good leader. Being technical, is not enough, you need to gain experience managing people.

If you want to break into this industry the HVAC course is good. You need usually type 1 and 2 and or universal to buy and dispense refrigerant. Another good course to check into if its in your area is CAMT training. Texas and Florida have it I know. CAMT is Certified Apartment Maintenance Technician.

The computer repair wont really do you much good in a big corporate company unless your going in for the ITT postion within the corporate office if that position is even around there. Knowledge though in computer usuage such as office suite is usually a good essential to have.
