How did you get your start doing maintenance mechanic work, and what career moves did you make to get to your current position?

Do you need a particular educational background?

I have to work the rest of my life because i have been self employed for so long. my program that I joined at lawrence general was called Industrial maintenance training, I suggest because if I did stay in the military (i was in for 6 years) join the military they have all diffrent kinds of jobs it is not all about blowing things up and shooting people

The way I got into this field is that I enjoy tinkering around figuring things out. I taught myself basic electrical, mig and tig welding, plumbing and some HVAC. I also have some background in electrical blueprint reading. Regardless how daunting the task may be at hand I still do it. Such as personal matters, cleaning out my mower deck, changing oil on a regular bases, replacing bulbs when they go out, a dripping faucet or running toilet. If you can get that into your head on a regular bases the better off you are.
Unfortunately, you will be at the bottom of the pole. You will get crap jobs at first. Do them and do them well. Dont complain about crap jobs. Take them on and complete them. Learn while you go. This is where they decide if there going to let you go up. If you cant even do a simple P.M. on your personal things then you will never be a valued maintenance personnel because you will not do it at the work place either.
Some places will take you on as a maintenance mechanic or maintenance helper and let you go up. Dont expect to start out very much though. The place I work has around 35 pieces of different equipment and I am apart of the start up in the mornings. They have anything from meat grinders to multi vacs and ultra vacs to smoke houses to metal detectors and conveyors and handtmanns, lifts. The list goes on. Its a new experience everyday.
As far as a degree, I dont have one. Really dont want one.
