Nobody said it better than the previous comments on this subject.
1.Work safe
2. Think before you jump.
3. Always ask when you are not sure. A dumb question is easier to handle than a dumb mistake.
One other tip....Always try to finish what you start. Try not to "dump" you work on to the next shift.

I have on twelve years in building maintenance but I would like to move to maintenance mechanic. How do I get a foot in the door. I hear that it mostly learning on the job. Is this true? Cause I can't afford training programs.

Top 3 skills:Determenation :The Determenation to find a way to fix something you don't have things to fix it.
: Experience: The experience to know how to fix things.
: Imagination: You must have an Imagination to find ways to repare things when you don't have the right things to repare it.

Tips or insights: Not to be afraid to ask questions to some one that knows more then you. To think out of the box when you can fix something.

nowadays ( ive been in and out of the field since 1983) you need some kind of vocational training especially in basic electricity. many employers want the most bang for their bucks they are not willing to train on the job anymore.
