What is the best training for becoming a maintenance mechanic? What types of ongoing training or certifications are necessary to be an effective maintenance mechanic?

What do non-traditional career paths look like?

THE YEARS THAT YOU WOULD PUT IN A JOB AND WHAT YOU WOULD LEARN FROM THEM, WOULD MAKE YOU A BETTER PERSON ON WHAT YOU DO,BUT YOU MUST LIKE WHAT YOU DO...YOU WOULD HAVE TO START FROM THE BOTTOM AND WORK YOUR WAY UP TO THE TOP AND THAT TAKES TIME AS YOU LEARN AND GET BETTER.YOU MUST BE PROFICIENT ON YOUR TRADE AS THE FOLLOWING PLUMBING,ELECTRICAL,CARPENTRY.A HVAC TECHNICIAN OF CERTFICAT AND BOILER OPERATION CERTFICATE ARE VERY IMPORTANT BUT YOU HAVE TO GO TO SCHOOL FOR THAT.YOUR FIRST STEP IS TO LEARN [PREVENTIVE MAINTENANCE0

Take the USPS Maintenance Mechanic 933 test. If you pass it, they will hire you at over $50,000 per year. Only about 6% of people that take the test will pass with a score of 70 or above. There are many more openings than qualified applicants.

With the invasion of our country by Mexico, private sector wages will decline and prices will go up quickly as the dollar collapses and our economy heads into the greatest depression the world has ever seen.

The security of a government job and benefits will be priceless because they receive cost of living raises. Pay for this position with USPS has gone up $10,000 since 2005.

The best thing you can do is go to college and and take their vocational training classes for industrial mechanics cluster. It was the best 2 years and learn alot about tools, machining, welding and some programimg too.
Study alot.......pick up books at flea markets, Amazon, like hydraulic books, bearing , clutches, gears, what ever you can get your hands on, anything you can on the that field.
As mentioned before, you need to start somewhere at the bottom like PMs and rebuilding equipment, Then the toubleshooting skills will follow.
Been doing this now for 32 years...........Learn alot on the job training.

Sounds to me like your training was or is crappy. Sometimes you have to search out for the right people to hook up with in the company. Sometimes more then one. Dont be afraid to ask questions. If it is a bad company your in and training isnt going right, start looking for books and teach yourself. Reason being, you leave that company, you may not get into another cause of lack of experience. Learn and retain what you can when you can. Take notes, right it down if its something that only happens every few weeks or months. I have got 4 journals in my locker at work with a whole bunch of stuff written down. If they make fun of you, let them. At least your trying. Take on some crappy jobs that noone else wants. Maybe you can get some respect from them. (You know, that bad smelly sump pump that is plugged for a few days in that stank water in the corner that everyone stays away from. LOL) Watch out for the $250,000 machine that noone works on. (Cause its a piece a junk to work on.) Find out whats wrong with it, study it, see if you can figure it out or get a manual on it. Work on it. If someone is working on something and it intrigues you, jump in and see if you can help. Dont take over, your learning, you assist. Be the runner, get tools, get stuff ready. If your having a bad day and or tired, step aside, grab a easy P.M. and go do it. Be by yourself, mellow, collect your thoughts. You are the MAN (or WOMAN), the all powerful, all knowing, quick witted and fast thinking. Enjoy the career.
