I feel that number one is the person must have good people skills. Knowing that their staff is ultimately responsible for their success, a great manager gets to know the staff and their work content. The next important ability is being able to reduce all tasks into standard work so that all people have a chance to do any work required. Some union members think that this leads to job reduction however this (cross training) leads to opportunities to provide customer service without productivity dropoff. The most important skill or trait is to demand that the group behaves in a safe manner and they must insist on a safe work environment.
