Look at the AAMA website. This is the most prestigious organization. Guess what everyone can't join, because the school you attend has to be accredited by the AAMA. This is endorsed by the AMA(American Medical Association). This test is made by nurses and doctors. Most jobs have been explicitly posting credialing by the AAMA or the AMT. Go toe the AAMA website and get all the facts. Just because a college or University has a MA program does not mean the program is accredited.

How do I become a certified medical assistant if I graduated from the program in 2004 but never took the test for certification and the school no longer exist?

You should still have a diploma. The AAMA will know if the school was accredited through them. All you need is your diploma and you should have received a envelope with your transcripts when you graduated. You may have to do research on your own to find out if they are under a different name or exactly what happened to them.
