I actually just finished up with school about 6 months ago and have been working at a pain specialist office. Beight that its a specialty office, I didn't get to practice everything I learned. I'm planning to change jobs soon but before I do, I'd like to take some sort of course where I can practice what I learned in school before I jump into it with no experience in certain areas. Mainly I would like to practice some more blood drawing and injections. Those are the main things I have not been able to do in the office I'm in now. Does anyone know where I could take a course to practice these skills? I live in Jacksonville Florida. |

From what I'm hearing it sounds like I'm in better shape than I thought. I'm a Medical Assistant with an ASS in Medical Assisting and I have job experience but most jobs want you to be certified and that I'm not. I bought a Medical Assisting Exam Review so I can study for the certification exam and it has a CD with study guides. There are other jobs to apply for. The many skills that the medical assistant is trained to do. Get on the internet and look for medical schools on line. Penn-Foster is one of them and Stratford Career Institute, they offer courses that you can take and receive certification or even be able to sit for proffesional certification for what you studied. Another thing is to look for internships for a job. I hope I helped someone and wish me good luck!! |

This is Crazy! We paid a lot of money for this degree! There HAS to be a refresher course! I called Bryman today and spoke to a lady who told me she has never heard of one. Let's do our research and see if we can find something, then post what we find. Maybe we can help each other out with this.

Shannon, there are no refresher courses. IT JUST PROVES THAT ALL THEY WANT IS TO TAKE YOUR MONEY,AND LEAVE YOU IN THE DUST.i just called the local MA school, and the lady on the hotline pretended like she knew what i was talking about, but i could tell she didnt. she then transferred me to an admissions councelors, telling me to get my other transcrips from my old school to see where i could "pick off" from where i last started. i aint paying no money.NO REFRESHER COURSE PEOPLE! you gotta pay...again |

I have been out of the field for two years because my husband is military and i had to move around. bryman told it's students we could come back to our classroom anytime and brush up on our skills....one problem......i dont live there anymore, and it isn't bryman anymore, and they closed my campus! i paid a riduculous amount of money for that "diploma"..... all i want is to be able to be competitive in the job market. I cannot honestly say that i would remember my all my skills in phlebotomy or labwork... i mean, HELLO! It's been a while! Why can't we have the same kinds of refresher courses and continuing education that nurses have access to! |

I am also looking for a refresher course. I graduated from Chubb Institute in 2007, and I became certified in May of 2009. I have applied for several jobs and have been turned away for not having enough experience. How is anyone supposed to gain experience without having the opportunity to display the skills they already have? I even offered to volunteer my time to gain the experience necessary to qualify me for the position, and still no luck. I guess its all about who you know and not what you know. I have an associate I know from our children attending the same school, anyway she has no experience, no certification, and she was recently hired in a doctors office as a medical assistant. I don't think that's fair for those who spend thousands of dollars for these courses and have a very hard time gaining employment. I think we should sue these so-called Medical Assistant institutions for false advertisement. Good luck to you all on this never ending journey. Kishia from Jersey |

I am looking for a refresher course in Deltona Fla. I have a Assoc. Degree in Med. Asst. I received in Dec. 2006. I worked on job for only 2 mos. it did not work out. Since then I've not had a med asst. job its been a little over 2 years. I did well on my externship but I could tell I didn't receive the best treatment as a candidate for a job there. I'm beginning to think it is because of my age, I turned 60 in Sept. When I started school as asked them if my age would be a problem they of course said no. I received a 3.60 grade average at graduation. However, I still owe money I cannot pay because I still don't have a job. I feel I now need a refresher course that costs nothing or next to nothing being I still owe already. I would appreciate any help in these matters. |

I finally contacted the institute I graduated from, and have been taking refresher courses for the last month. I was informed by the school that any time a former graduate needs any assistance the school is supposed to provide it. I know it may have been several years that has past, but maybe those looking for refresher courses should contact their former institute, also you can volunteer at hospitals and clinics that might help as well. There is always someone that is willing to help, but you just how to know where to find them. Good luck and stay motivated don't give up. |

Boy, I didn't realize that there are a lot of us in the same boat, ie, needing refresher courses! I graduated as a certifed medical assistant in 1985. I've been in the medical field ever since; however the last 12 years I've been a medical insurance processor. Well around here, jobs are scare. I lost mine in Dec 2008.So,I thought Id like to take some refresher courses, learn Centricity?? and EMR -I know I can learn them but apparently I can't get hired without knowing these things. Also the Medical Society of Portland -which is a medical placement agency that many medical facilities in the Portland Metro area deal with, won't even look at you if you don't have RECENT experience. Oh, and did I mention RECENT PAID experience and 1 year of that to boot!-so forget about getting an apprenticeship, especially if looking for work right away. I'd hate to go back to square one-and I don't know about you all, I certainly can't afford it. If anyone knows where there are refresher courses are in the Portland Metro area please let me know. In fact--educators out there-You get a clue- come up with this curriculum now PLEASE |

I was told that as long as you are working in the medical field for two years or more you can challenge the medical assisting course. I would find graduating students and see if you can buy their books so you can study for the test. I never took the test but graduated from the medical assisting program. I never really worried about it. There are places that will take you on as a medical assistant even if you are not certified. You might have to work the front office for a while until you get experience to work back office. But it actually up to the Dr's office discretion if you need to be certified or not. |

Hi. For all of us who have previously obtained a certification in Medical Assisting, you can contact the AAMA and see if they have you on record. I got mine in 1986 and sure enough, they had me on file. So I plan on joining my local chapter here in Oregon and studying on my own then scheduling a time to recertify so I can be a CMA again. Since there are no refresher courses here in Oregon-this is the best way to go. Also you might be able to work in an office, maybe front office and they might give you the opportunity to work in the back (with supervison) to gain and or practice your medical assisting skills. The American Association of Medical Assistants website has a wealth of info, including contacts and local chapters (costs of joining etc) take the time to go through it-great info for recertification inluding practice exams You might be suprised to know what you retained when you take the practice exams for medical terminolgy and anatomy and phisology. Hope this helps . |
