So, I went back to school because I was laid off in 2009. I was told that it was a great decision because I have an extensive background in the financial industry, collecting/data entry/return specialist. Here I am still looking for work. The really STUPID thing is, I would get calls for interview dates and I would go, put my best foot forward. Then I get the email or phone call stating that, they were very impressive unfortunately, they cannot afford to have someone w/o the additional 1 year experience. I am a bold/blunt person and I have to keep calm...I just want to say "So, why call me for an interview, conduct the interview, praise me then email or call me with this news!"

Really, I was also told that I should start volunteering. In this economy, with children, mortgage, and cars note. Is there anyone out there that will give people like us a chance? As I am reading through everyone's posts, I felt the need to let others know, you are not alone. We are in the same boat. I am still out there looking for employment and this time around I am stepping outside the box...looking for any type of employment that would pay and not volunteer for 6-9 months. INDIVIDUALS WITH FAMILIES CANNOT AFFORD TO VOLUNTEER!

I would suggest looking for entry level HIM jobs, something in medical records, account follow up, charge entry or front desk. Gain some much needed medical experience and become more familiar with ICD 9, CPT and reimbursement. Then you can move up to a coding position.

I started out doing charge entry and moved up to coding.
