I am looking to work from home doing Medical Billing at home. I have asked around and I have also done some research on the subject. I went to school for Medical Office, but I wanted to narrow everything I've learned down to just Medical Billing. If you can help me...Please email me at Poohs_220@yahoo.com |

I'm a recent graduate of medical coding and billing I have an associates degree. I also qualify to audit, medical records, and information tech. As well I have not found a job as at a entry level everyone keeps telling me I need some experience but if no one is willing to give me a chance then how would I gain the experience. If any one have a clue of how I could start at home or in a office please let me know. I'm in Columbus, Oh |

What jobs can I apply for if I want to become a Medical Biller and have no Medical Billing experience? Claims processor; collector? What does anyone suggest? Medisoft experience is what employee's are looking for. I have had several interviews but when they ask if I know how to use the Medisoft program I do not know outside of taking it in school. Truthfully, I have forgotton how to use the program since I graduated from school in 2006. I a currently in the medical field. |

Professional Medical Billers Association in Brick, New Jersey said: Hi Peaches, Hello, I have been in the medical field for over 15 YEARS as a Medical Assistant, Receptionist and Scheduler. I recently transitioned 3 years ago from Medical Assisting to Medical Billing and Coding. I graduated in 2006. I have not been able to get a job in the Billing/collections or Finance Department in the hospital. I have been a payment poster for the last 3 years, verifying insurance, scheduling appt ect. There are just no jobs for unexperienced billers or collectors where I work. I have been looking else where for employment and hoping that I find a clinic or hospital that would be willing to train me on the "billing" aspect of the job. I know the medical and coding side of the job. I just need to be given the chance to show I can do the work. I am willing to take a job at a bank as a medical claims processor, ect. Anything to get "paperwork" experience. I need to work in a job that deals with "finance" "claims" "EOBs" "collections" etc. Do you have any suggestions for outside of the medical relm? Maybe I can get a job outside of the clinic to get the "paperwork" experience and then after I obtain a year's experience, re-apply? |

I recently lost my job and I am looking for a home business. my backround is medical billing for medical and dental offices. I am looking at a company in California where I have to buy their software and they will provide me with the doctors. the software cost is 199 dollars and they stated they are not a get rich quick place and you do have to do the work to get paid. I am afraid of doing it just because that 199 is like 3 bills that I could be paying. please tell me what you think. and If you have ever heard of the company NETWORK HEALTH??? |

I guess I am just going to have to sleep on it again and again until I know for sure what I am going to do. Would you have any suggestions. Thank you

WHAT TO LOOK FOR IN A MEDICAL BILLING AND CODING SCHOOL: Job Placement - What is their job placement rate. By law this must be disclosed to you. Always ask for this in writing. Accreditation - Who are they acrredited with and how easy is it to get this accreditation. Some accrediting bodies allow the schools they represent 6 months to place their students and only require them to maintain a 60% job placement rate. Coding Certification - Is this a school that teaches billing and a watered down version of coding? Do they help you get your CPC or CCS coding certifications? Typing Skills - Most companies require that you type 40 plus words a minute. This is something you can work on at home but your training institution should emphasize the importance of this. Billing Schools - If their curriculum is billing specific, they should tell you this. Many schools (Everest, UEI, Kaplan,) illustrate Coding in their advertisments but dont teach you nearly enough to pass the AAPC or the AHIMA exams. Externship - An externship is the volunteer portion of your training. The externship is designed to get you hands on field experience. Many externship sites require a contract with the school along with a certain amount of insurance. Does your school have an externship component? Jobs Search - Just because the lob listing say 1-3 years of experience does not mean they don't hire entry level coders. Some clinics will overlook your lack of job experience if you have obtained a coding certification. Some companies may also see something else in your resume that attracts their attention. 1-6 months of searching for a job is not uncommon. In Calfornia, 50-100 resumes a week should be your goal. Resume - Must be reviewed by additional sources besides yourself. 30% of the people on this site will not make it to the interview phase simply because of how their resume is worded and formatted. Your school must have a job placement department who will assist you in this. |

I am also certified in medical claims and billing thru us career institute out of colorado I done the course at home while I worked my part time job as a public transit driver in my little home town of Gladwin Mi. The Dr. in this town all are affiliated with Mid Michigans physicians group out of Midland Hospital. So I guess my question would be how to get a job doing this out of my home? Please don't say I wasted my money on this career. |

I have been looking for at home billing too and they are very hard to find. But I do know it is impossible to get a at home billing job for a entry position because the companies, so i have been told, want to make sure that you are well experienced before you do at home billing. Hope this helps! |

Get your Medical Coding Certifications. This wont guarentee you a job but it will dramatically increase you salary potential and job prospects. You dont need a degree to obtain these certs and many schools are building Bachelor Degree programs around obtaining these certifications (BEWARE). |

Do you really think a medical office is going to trust you with their receiveables (BIG MONEY) without recognized training, propper certifications, and job experience? If you cant get a job in the field how are you going to get a job working from home? G Get a job in the field, establish credibility, gain some valuable experience and try 3 years from now. If you are looking for a quick fix then this is not the profession for you. If you need a volunteer site then let me know. |

Mike, My post was simply a response to those thinking that they can get jobs doing medical billing from their home. We in the industry know that most people have the incorrect assumption that there are opportunities in the marketplace where they can sign up with and be hired as a home based employee by an outside entity to process the entities overflow of medical claims. I mentioned medical transcription in my post to inform people that unlike medical billing there are legitimate entities that do hire people that work from remote locations to process their workflow. My intent was not to teach anyone the exact sequence of steps one would take in order to pursue a medical billing or transcription business/career BUT instead drive home the fact that there are no work from home medical billing jobs. My Post Did Exactly That and Did So Truthfully! Now, as for the last sentence in your post “You can sell your Medical Transcription Education on its own Merit”: I am a biller, coder, transcriber, business owner and mother not a pusher of online products or causes. Notice the link I used is not an affiliate link nor does it redirect to hide the fact that I might be giving advice as a way to get people to visit a webpage where I can profit from. Mirta |

Mz Mica39 in New York said: Hello Mirta, So there is nothing legitmate from home. Some people tend to find these companies and they want to take and hog all business for themselves. So, it is hard for this to not to work for some of us. Who are eager to work. Since, I have a full time job as an MA. A little extra income will be great for me and my family. Thats not true. 2 hospitals in the mid sized town I work in employee medical coders and transcriptions that are housed as telecommuniters. You just have to network because most of the time the legitimate companies want to keep it quiet so they are not overwhelmed with average workers that want to take advantage of telecommuniting positions. |

I thank each and everyone of you for this information. I live in a rural town and through each of your posted I have learned now I can't trust anyone at this time. I went for Medical Transcription, Medical Administration and now to Medical Coding and Billing honestly to work from home. Since this post, it has me make up my mind not to waste time. I don't want to work outside of the home anymore and if possible I am not. I worked as a CNA and Clerical in nursing home and other healthcare companies for 5 years. I am now unemployed after being fired from a Clinic not because I couldn't do the work, but because I was battling some health issues which are better. I have decided to go back to college and go for what I love and not waste my time nor anyone else. I love to write, I have wrote my own book, wrote many novels, plays, and poetry; so I thought why waste my time with medical programs just go for what I love and I can work for the newspaper, news on television, radio, or work from home. So my comment is to thank many of you for helping me make up my mind and do what I love and that's write. |
