I am currently attending Devry online for Health Information Technology (HIT). I will be completing my program in May of 2013 and doing my onsite practicum real world experience in May. I like Devry and learned alot! I also would like to test for my AHIMA RHIT exam early and hoping to do the early testing option and take it in May 2013 while it is still fresh in my mind. I don't hear alot from Devry HIT students about their success after finishing the program. My question is for the Devry students did you find a medical coding job after completing school? How long did it take? Did some of you get hired at your practicum site? Are some of you still looking for employment?

How are they a scam? They are a AHIMA approved school I checked it out myself they are listed and their students can take the RHIT exam upon graduating. I have been going there since 2009 I haven't had any big problems the only thing is their financial aid office can be a pain sometimes but other than that it's okay.

I talked to some employers, actual medical coding directors and they told me they are not concerned about what school students went too they are more concerned about if the school is AHIMA accredited and if you have your RHIT credentials.

I don't know were you did your research but I suspect that it wasn't with those that are currently working in medical billing and coding.

Well I can't speak for everyone and I'm going to think positive not negative . I know I will find a good paying medical coding job upon graduation . Where I live I see coding jobs lots of them listed all the time.

I am also taking online classes at Devry for health information technology, and will be doing my practicum in May. I too am wondering about success after graduation, I work for a health insurance company adjusting claims so I am hoping that will add toward experience in the field.

I will be doing my practicum in May as well and also I signed up with Devry to take a class in May (it's online ) to prepare for the RHIT Exam and if I pass the class Devry will pay for my first attempt to take the RHIT exam (which I plan on passing on first try) I think we will be good. I believe that I will find success in this field after graduation, I have 3 years experience in the healthcare world. Also with the implementation of ICD-10 I think there will be more opportunities for the newbies in this field.

it also depends on whether you have the certification or not , many of my friends have given the medical billing and coding certification with national certification career association

you can just start a career by given a certification you dont have to spend thousands to start with that career

The pay they are offering is really good for a person with no experience too.

I am sorry it isn't working out for you right now ,but I am excited to possibly be offered a medical coding position at my internship site with no experience in a very popular and competitive field.

I graduated from a college here in Georgia in 2012 and sat for my RHIT right after graduation and passed. There was 9 of us and 5 of us have taken the RHIT and have all passed. All 9 of us found employment either before graduating or soon after. I believe at least two of them are coders (they were hired with no prior experience). I work for a hospital in the quality department doing core measures and internal reporting. I think that the health information degree is a great degree and has so many job options. I wish you all the luck with your career and if you have any questions let me know!

How many hours is the practicum and how long do you get to finish it?

The practicum was 80 hours long. We had anywhere from May 6th to June 30th to finish the practicum and I completed my 80 hours on June 3rd. I finished with school just working on studying for my RHIT Test.
