dlaurie483 in Toledo, Ohio said: I am going through Allied Medical School. They sounded really good. I like the fact that they had a Job Assistance Network and that they also had a Career Center. I am just having trouble with the transcription. Which is driving me crazy. I noticed your comments are from 17 months ago. Are you finished and working? I am going through the exact same thing right now. I am having such a hard time with comma's. I don't mind the transcriptioning at all, it's just the punctuation that is killing me and it is taking me forever. I get discouraged and then don't do it for weeks, now I'm so far behind it's stressful. |

I is so good to know that I am not the only one struggling with Allied Schools MT program. I am Active Duty and The Army gives you a timeline that is way before the time allowed by the school program. I am on Pulmonary Medicine 6 and I have to be completed with it by 2 November 2010 or I have to pay the money back to the Tutition Assistance. I started out wanting to pursue another career, and now I just want to complete it before I owe the Army. If anyone can help my email address is mrs.rtoney@yahoo.com, or rikke.toney@us.army.mil |

i have thought about going into medical transcription. am still doing my homework on it. one day i'm in, next day i'm out. what i am hearing is that this field is being outsourced to other countries. in speaking with someone from one of the MT schools and telling him this, he himself questions how this can be allowed with the current HIPA laws in place. any thoughts on this? |

JMH in Elkhart, Indiana said: In response to the court reporting comment and speaking as a former court reporter, court reporting is NOT where the money is. Pay has decreased incredibly over the past 15 years as companies have bought up smaller court reporting agencies and cornered the market, forcing reporters to work for very little in order to get work. School is expensive and takes 4-6 years or longer. Equipment and software is expensive. There is also an abundance of court reporters to compete with. |

I see a lot of posts from people that have or are doing the Allied MT class. I am almost done I have 2 chapters and then the final. I am losing my mind!! Medical Terminology was so easy and this is very hard. I consider my self pretty smart and this class and making me feel completely useless!! I feel like I should have had degree in english before I signed up for this!! I don't have any issues with the medical terms it is usually grammar issues that I get hammered on. If there is any one out there that can help me out with the psychiatry test and the next few chapters after it it would be greatly appreciated. I also can help anyone with the prior chapters since I have already completed them. Thanks is advance. |

Sheri in Chandler, Arizona said: Who ever put those commercials on T.V. should be shot. I have been in med. transcription for over 17 years now. No one tells you that the hard part is learning to listen. Every time I get a new doc I have to learn his/her style, accent, and preferences. In the long run, if you are willing to hang in there, it is worth it. Ours is a job that is secure. The docs cannot do without us, as long as we are willing to go the length with them, and sometimes beyond. We are their alibi (if you will) in malpractice cases, their stat connection if they forget to dictate a letter needed for pre-auth, the ear on the other end they depend on putting their words to print. Trust me, you may feel as though what you are doing doesn't matter to anyone but you, but it matters to the doctors, nurses, MAs, insurance companies, malpractice attorneys, and last, certainly not least, the patients, even if they don't know it. If you are in it to make a quick buck, get out. If you are truly dedicated to making this job work for you, stick with it, you will be fine. Use all of your resources. Talk to people just like you are talking here. MTStar is a place to go, if they are still around. Email me if you need other resources, and I will find them. Research is also a part of this job. I'd like some more encouragement from you.Leonor |

I am on the last bit of Allied and I have to say I am totally frustrated, and not looking forward to turning in the final exams. The dictations could be translated many different ways and still be comprehended the same. I have 15-17 ready to turn in and am waiting for 14 to be returned to me. if there is anyone else done or close to being finished, I would love to work together. sgt11936spa@yahoo.com. |

If it helps at all, here is a forum post over at an MT forum with links to various resources useful for medical transcriptionists. It should make it a lot easier for you to research information, www.mtgab.com/forum/ubbthreads.php/topics/11120/Some_good_web_resources#Post11120 |

There is no 'easy' way to get through transcription except by getting it done. The good, bad and ugly of it is that you are never faster than your "worst" dictator. It may be slow now and very frustrating, much like learning a new language, but believe me, if you hang in there, it will be worth it. I felt the same way 25 years ago and I remember spending more in babysitter fees than making while training! My boss was a very wise woman, who told me to keep focused on the prize. Transcription has changed a great deal since then, but with voice recognition being the big thing, you could do that. You must, however, learn the terminology and be familiar with transcription. |

I am working on my final now and am so scared. I really need and want to pass but the grammar is killing me. I have come to despise commas as they trip me up big time. There is really only 1 transcript out of the 5 that I am worried about. The doc really mumbles and speeds through the first part. Anyone take the Allied course and get Bonus Radiology 171 CT scan of the head? I'm really unsure of my format and the words he says right at the beginning. I managed to do some research and figured out part of it, but I don't want to fail. I need to pass as I have exactly 1 week to complete the course with a pass. If anyone could help I can email the transcript to you for some help. My email is surfergrl90503@yahoo.com. Thanks in advance. |

You should be aware that it is likely that Allied personnel probably know about this forum and that it should be fairly easy to identify you. What you are doing is soliciting assistance in cheating on your final. (One hopes that Allied considers cheating to be unacceptable.) If you cannot do the work, you need to get more and better training. Please don't cheat your way into graduation. The job you are hoping to get will affect the real medical records of real people. If your work is sloppy and inaccurate, you could cause serious harm to someone. Or maybe you don't care. Shame on you. |

If your work is sloppy and inaccurate, you could cause serious harm to someone. Or maybe you don't care. My intent was not to cheat. I have never cheated and don't plan on starting any time soon. I was simply hoping someone could help with one sentence, not by giving me the right answer, but by telling me only if it was completely wrong, in which case I would do more research to figure it out myself. I ended up turning in my final not long after posting this and no one looked at it but me. I understand the seriousness of the medical record and I do care. I was simply using all possible resources and am sorry if it appeared I was trying to cheat as that was not my intention. I have used forums many times to get word help throughout my training and it has been really helpful in learning words and formats that were unfamiliar to me. We are all learning a new language and at times it can be discouraging. Coming to MT forums has encouraged me to keep going, keep learning, it will get easier. To an extent it has. I realize I need to learn more and in an ever changing medical field we are all always learning. Our best resources are each other. I wish I could take back my post as I never even waited for someone to reply before sending in my final transcripts. I hope that others don't get discouraged from reaching out for help. |

Hello, I am thinking about starting the medical transcription & editing program through Career Step. Has anyone out there completed the program through this school? I want to know every detail about what you thought about it. Also, they provide job placement at the end of your training. They say they have an 85% success rate with jobs after schooling. Has anyone out there had a positive experience with finding a job after finishing medical transcription with Career Step? Thank you so much! Any information would be very helpful to my decision! |

I am noticing a lot of folks posting comments regarding trouble with MT courses, as well as starting out as an MT in the medical field. I have been an MT subcontractor and MT instructor since 1986, and if I can be of any assistance regarding beginning a career in, or taking MT courses for MT positions, I would be more than happy to help out. I ended up here and read the whole thread. I'm a little more than halfway through the MT course at Andrews School. I decided on them (fortunately) after starting out googling "Medical Transcription Association of America" which I found had changed to the Association for Healthcare Documentation Integrity. AHDI has a list of approved schools on their site. I considered a couple of others, but went with Andrews. Their course is wonderful! It's called "graduated" because the practice dictations you listen to gradually bring in phrases that you don't understand, but when you hear it on the next dictation, you understand it because now you've come across it before. It's also broken up into specialty areas like cardiology, urology, dermatology, etc. There are lots of new phrases in each one that are particular to that specialty. The part I'm doing now is all surgery. I understand that some MTs don't know how to transcribe surgery. The last part of the course is dictators whose second language is English, so a lot of heavy foreign accents. They already have sprinkled in some ESL speakers thusfar in the course, but they're relatively easy to understand. I can almost always reach the student coordinator, or even the owner, by phone during business hours, and frequently email my course instructor with questions for clarification. I usually get an answer the same day, or at least the next one. This is a wonderful school! I feel bad for the folks here that have had such unhappy experiences with their courses. |

I just figure with every report I screw up, I am learning . I am not sure what other position you could get with this training. There may be someone willing to hire you as a front office receptionist ? Good luck. im taking the course but need help with the last three quizes 31 32 and final if u can help me or have copies u can send or fax to me id appreciate it working two jobs trying to get done but my percentage dropped to 70 something i cant fail this course my gma will e devastated id appreciate it |

Does anyone know if there are any other jobs besides MT that I can get once I finish my course? Do what they call and once thru, then go back over it again and again and again. you'll be surprised how it comes to you. also remember WHAT anatomical part the report is about and that will help lessen the chance of using words that sound similar. |
