Medical Transcription From Home

I chose Med Workshops because they are local and I was able to research and vet them. I know women who went through the school and are still employed with they're partner, TNI Transcription Network. They have an A+ rating with the BBB and the CEO, April, has been our states Business Woman of the Year twice.
I received all my books, medical dictionary, e-library, foot pedal and software. The books are the same ones used by the best schools. The course includes SUM training. The course is intense and I hope I make
it! The internship is included and is part of the course. TNI hires all of the graduates from Med Workshops. You do not have to accept the job, but most do. It's a great way to get your two years of experience. They only hire newbies from Med Workshops and Andrews. Med Workshops only takes as many students as they will have employment for.

Students from Andrews have all coursework included, and that includes a full-size medical dictionary, reference books (that can be used in the real world on the job). We didn't need to have a school "get us a job" after completing the course----companies came to Andrews looking for new grads. Make sure any school you choose has the reputation that can help open doors and get you that first job. Employers do know who has a good training program and who doesn't.

I went to Andrews and certainly didn't need an " internship ." I started in acute care ---regular pay for doing regular work. No "beginning wage" or paying to someone to "let me work."

I went to school HIGHLY interested in transcription. I love transcribing & learned it very quickly. I had a passion for making sure my reports were as error free as possible. After struggling to get a 3-month internship during college, then struggling to find someone to hire an unexperienced MT, I finally found a job that lasted about 4 months. Currently, I am unemployed & have been for over a year because I can't find any transcription company/hospital/clinic that will hire anyone without years of experience. How can one GET experience unless someone is willing to GIVE experience?

I have come to the conclusion that MT is not what I thought it was, and after hours & hours of reading through forums, talking to other transcriptionists & calling around to many facilities- transcription is going downhill.

My advise is to trudge forward at your own risk. You'd be better off doing something else. In my opinion & personal experiences- my schooling was a waste of time & money.

I have been a medical transcriptioninst for 13 years, doing it from home, working for several different surgical practices locally. Unfortunately all have gone to EMR (electronic medical records) and gradually phased me out. I am currently unemployed, with all of this experience, love doing medical transcription and cannot find work locally. I do not want to go nationwide, working for another company that pays 8 cents a line, mandating a certain number of lines per day or a certain number of hours. I feel sorry for students who take all these high priced medical transcription courses and then are not able to find work. I have much empathy for all of them and wish there was a network out there that could help us in our quest for employment. GOOD LUCK to all the new medical transcriptionists with their degrees. I loved doing medical transcription and just wish I had employment!!!

I thank all who have helped me and have now felt like MT/MA was a waste of my time so, I am now attending Walden University in Communication online work. I hope to land a work from home job there. I am going for a BS in Communication Work Online. I love the courses and is still a stay at home mom. I do gift baskets from home, working on a jewerly business, and fashion designer until I can finish my degree and work from home or become the CEO of my own Publishing Company.

I took the Medical Transcription course at the College of Lake County in Illinois and so far, I have not be able to find anyone who will give a new graduate a chance. I'm beginning to think I wasted my money.

Try Nuance.com They are willing to give new MT graduates a chance. They did me almost 3 years ago now and I still work for them. I was right out of my transcription course when they hired me.

For all medical transcriptionist who have been outsourced, you simply just need to stop working for these companies until they come back with a pay scale suitable to your expertise. Think about it, no medical records would get processed and no reimbursement services would be available. Without you, they would be nothing. No history and physicals would be done for surgical patients and physicians would be totally stopped from doing their procedures. No information would be processed. Unite and become organized, such as a union until you are paid what you are worth. It is that simple. Speech recognition does not work and they know it and that is why they are paying minimal pay for you to use your knowledge and ability to clean up their mess.

Oh, one more observation I just noticed, on this particular page it says self-paced home study for $60,000/year. That is a pipe dream. You would have to stay glued to your chair, and have six arms, and 12 ears. There is just no way for that to be true. This work of medical/surgical/heart catheterizations, cadaveric liver transplants, foreign speaking physicians who never spell their names, or any other names of professional members of the community, which leaves you with the work of trying to find this information, which takes away from you making money, because you are paid by the line, minute, etc. and if you don't reach your quoto, they you are criticized and penalized, and forget QA trying to help you -- they don't care because they have quotas, too. All the companies want is turn-around time so they don't take a hit by the contract they signed. In other words, there is no way you will make anywhere near $60,000 a year. You might make 15 or 20,000 if you are able to remain in your chair and not be interrupted for 8 hours. No be stupid. They want you to say in your chair, not go to the bathroom, eat or do anything but hit that keyboard. Even laws prevent you from not being given proper breaks to avoid injury to your spine, wrists, etc. But the industry doesn't care because you are at home doing this work practically free from any liability on the employer's part. Just stop working for these people and see how quick their attitude changes. They are become millionaires while you cannot even pay your internet bill to do their work.

Antonio S, just curious, can you say what company you transcribe(d) for? Are you still transcribing? I do agree with your comments for the most part, been transcribing 35 years, the last 15 at home, have been with my current company (located in PA) for 2 years now. It's been a downhill slide for sure financially but still hanging in there. I'm in Kettering, OH. Anyway, take care.

IT is so true. Finding doctors' names and infos are really time consuming not even mention if those sentences make sense in the documents.

I am doing an online course to be a Med Tran at US Career Institute. It's a good school, i'm almost done with the course. I started in Mar 2011 and have a year from that date to finish. I like that because you can take your time. The assignments aren't rushed.

Could you please tell me how your school/educational experience was with Career Step? Sorry know your comments on this board was a few years ago, but just found this site..... : ) Thank you so very much!

Antonio, what company(s) did you work for or try out as a transcriptionist? I've done this job 36 years now and have always made at least $28 to 32,000 a year, both in-house years back, now for 15 years from home and continue to do around $30,000. That's working full time and some mandatory OT these past 3 years, always doing second shift hours. I'm one of the still lucky ones, I know that, with an old-school straight typing account (no VR, I hated that stuff and would not do it again). What with systems like EPIC that the hospitals are paying so much for, what will probably happen is that now many smaller outfits are advertising for medical transcriptists again until they're forced to have to comply. I just know I'm going to stay with this company till they lay me off. But again, I strongly encourage any newbies here to be looking for another career.

OK...so I will be going through the enrollment process once I choose a college. I want to work from home, period. I can type 80+ wpm, so I was thinking medical transcription. I have already been through college once and graduated in 2006 with AAS for radiologic technology, so I'm already an x-ray tech, but I can't find a job doing that here in the Knoxville area, so I have let my license expire. I can't use it anyway unless I'm willing to move, which I'm not. So you're saying that I wouldn't be able to find a job in medical transcription either? I don't want to waste my time going through school again and then not be able to find a job. What about billing and coding? I could do one or both if it would help. I need some direction and feedback here. Someone who can help me, PLEASE help me figure out what to do without wasting my time again!

I am needing some direction. I already have my AAS for Radiologic Technology, but I have let my license expire because there are no xray jobs around, and people attending school for that are wasting their time. I want to work from home more than anything in the world. I have started looking into going back to school online for medical transcription or billing/coding or both. I just don't want to waste my time like I did before and have a degree that I can't even use. I want to do transcription or billing and coding from home. Does anyone know if there are jobs open for either of these that are work-from-home positions? Any advice or direction would be greatly appreciated.

Billing and Coding is one and the same. I have a Medical Coding and Health Information Technician Diploma as well as a Medical Administrative Assistant Diploma from Tennessee Technology Center. Let's just blame it on this recession or whatever folks want to call it. No one is hiring. At least not where I live anyway.

Brandie, PLEASE do a lot of reading about being a medical transcriber these days so you save yourself time and energy and money. Go to the MT Stars forum and read for yourself. This used to be a good profession but thanks to the new systems coming into the hospitals like EPIC, transcription jobs are disappearing overnight once those systems are implemented. I've been doing this 36 years. I'm still hoping to ride what I do into retirement as I think there will be some jobs left here and there but again, thanks to technology, they just don't need us like in the old days. The most I ever made doing this was $32,000 a year, and that's with OT almost weekly and on the second shift. Many claim they've made up to $40,000 to $60,000 in the past; can't imagine how.
