Greetings!

I am a recent graduate with an Associate's Degree in Applied Sciences, with my specialty being Medical Transcription. I have taken classes in a variety of fields and have completed a transcription internship. I was wondering if there is anyone that can give me some advise in my job search or if there are any companies that are willing to give me a run at transcribing for them.

I can be reached at page_dennis@yahoo.com and generally check e-mail multiple times daily. I can give a resume with references if needed.

Thanks for looking and thanks for your time!

You're very right about everyone expecting 1-3 years experience. It's hard for recent graduates to find something, I have been looking for about a month now & have been having no luck.

I am having the same problem - I graduated from a program in mid-May with a high GPA, and I can't seem to find anything that doesn't require experience. The job market is flooded with experienced transcriptionists that it is difficult for new grads, it seems.

Yeah, I am still having the same problem... I have been offered a position doing business transcription & I have no idea if I should go for it or not. I feel like I have spent 3 years learning to do Medical Transcription, why should I have to relearn so many things over to do Business Transcription.. I still have had no luck finding a Medical Transcription position, everyone wants experience that is not school; if it is not experience, it is that they are not hiring..

My daughter is doing the classes now because we thought it would be a great idea for being a stay-at-home mom. Now I almost wish I hadn't even told her I was doing it until I found all this out. Who knew... Do you think that if you took the business transcription job that the MT companies would then count that as experience? I joined AHDI with a student membership, thinking that would help. Have you joined that? I am taking a webinar through them the 23rd of June for new grads. (BTW, my maiden name was Dennis - small world, huh.)

I have seen a few MT courses that claim to certify you and also help you with job placement...... They "claim" to have 75% of people hired within 3 months after they complete the course and the other 25% are people that did not take the course seriously....

I wonder if any of you that are having problems getting hired did you actually use a course that claims to give job placement?

I'm not sure that companies would count that as experience, only because they want acute care/hospital experience. I think they would take it as job experience, getting paid for it, but not as acute care/hospital. I haven't joined AHDI, although I should. My e-mail is page_dennis@yahoo.com, you should e-mail me so we can talk through there, what do you say?

I received an Associate's Degree in HIMS but my specialty was MT.. My courses were not intended to give job placement, but did include an internship. Mine was supposed to turn into a free-lance job, but after asking them about my pay, I haven't heard a word from them.

Wayne - I have noticed that alot of MTs that are on the AHDI blog on facebook have attended schools that have internships, but they, too, are not getting employed. A few are, though. The course I took was very intense, and they gave me the names of online companies that call them regularly, looking for new grads, so from that standpoint they help with placement. I have applied with those, but they have turned me away at the time of my first contact. They just aren't hiring. And some I vhave never heard back from. I have a bachelor's degree in education, and I have never seen anything like this. Usually they at least will reply. I just think the market is saturated with applications from people looking for work. I feel well-prepared for an MT job, but I think, if you are looking for a school, I would maybe find one with a company affiliation that will hire you for a year or two to avoid this problem.

Hi Dana - I think this is unreal how many people are recent MT grads and can't find work. I find that on many blogs as well as talking to people in person. Just have to network and keep looking, I guess. Keep in touch. I certainly don't have any answers, but it does feel better to talk about it. kabee

I am interested to know if any of you have found jobs yet? I am a recent MT grad who has been looking since July with no luck. It would be nice to know if those who have been looking for even longer than me are finding any success at this point.

Hi Ebee-

I did find a job working IC status with a lady in California. This happened about a month or so ago, so I was searching quite a long time. I am lucky she came across me and is giving me a chance, otherwise I would have probably given up on my dreams of an MT. However, this job that I have now will probably not lead me anywhere or let me advance the way I want to, and for that reason- I am still searching for something in-house and/or something closer. If I don't come up with anything soon, I might have to try something totally different.

There isn't much out there for new MT's though. That is the cold and honest truth that I found out the hard way. I know that is hard to hear, but all the places I applied at, sent my resume to, took application tests for (Which was over 100 including hospitals, clinics, MT companies, ect) all told me that I did not have enough experience. How is one supposed to get experience when there aren't any places that will give you a chance to get experience without experience?

MTJobs.com and MTbot.com are two places that give lists of MT job openings and companies. You might try that if you haven't already.

Either way, good luck!!

P.D.,
Thanks for taking the time to respond. I'm glad you were able to find a job, and I hope you can eventually find something that offers you more opportunity.

I have had 3 companies tell me they are inundated with applications and that most of them are from transcriptionists who have been working for 20-30 years and have to find new work because of business closings. I'm beginning to think we all went to school for a dying art!

Thanks again for the reply and the suggestions.
