They are increasing because of the down-sizing and outsourcing that has gone on in many Pharmaceutical and medical device companies. These companies previously had in house writers. Cut-backs have resulted in work now being freelanced to medical communications agencies. You will probably see a lot of jobs for experienced writers - the issue is a lack of trainee or associate positions, if you don't have the experience.
