To start,

Take a EKG course. You might need experience for some hospitals, so take whatever you can.

This will get you into the medical field. As for moving up.. its where you wanna go and what you wanna do.. I've seen monitor techs go to radiology, to Electrophysio Labs, to cardiac nurses and so on...
