Hello. I'm relatively new to the nanny position (but with a lot of babysitting/sibling childcare experience), and have recently been asked to act as a live-in nanny for a prominent family in the area. The past few weeks during which I've been babysitting for the family have consisted of 20-hour workweeks, as the 3 children are still in school/local day camp. My pay has been competitive at $15/hour, and I understand that the perks and the living costs they mean to absorb at my move-in would mean that this rate might not be practical, long-term; but, their proposed weekly stipend is only $70 (This was negotiated up from $50). Granted, there are no major required housekeeping duties (laundry, upkeep, gardening, etc. are all taken care of by other domestic employees), and there are many non-financial and networking advantages, but I still don't feel very settled about the situation. If anyone has advice about how to re-broach the topic of pay rates, or what might be more (/is this) acceptable, please reply. I am a 21 year old female college sophomore (attended part-time while working for 3 years, now full-time), with two younger siblings at a 9 and 11 year age gap for which I'd provided in depth care for for at least 6 years. |

I recommend you find a new family to work for. Websites like www.care.com and www.sittercity.com have job posts daily for nannies and babysitters. In my opinion, you will go into this job feeling unsettled and things will only be more unsettling as time goes by... and at the point you will completely hate your job and will most likely be in debt considering the pay they are offering sucks. There are many families who appreciate their nannies and pay very well. I recommend you check out those websites. Best of luck to you. |
