I want to work in network security and I was advised to start with obtaining a CCNA cert, but I have no previous computer experience. I have contacted the community college, a New Horizons Center and Phoenix about their individual programs. The community college hasn't returned my calls about the program but from what I got from online it looks like it is a 2 year associate degree and then I would have to do all the certifications on my own. So for $$, I would have to add the cost of supplies, books, exams and any other fees as additional cost. That is completely different than the New Horizon's path that for a hefty $$$$ but shorter time gives me the certifications w/ the education and supplies all inclusive. Phoenix was much like the community college, giving me a degree vs. certifications and is also $$$. From my research and surveys from those already in networking, it seems certifications trump everything. I am having a difficult time deciding on what to do? If it wasn't for the $$$$ I would do New Horizons and be done. But it is $$$$, and that financial stress is pressuring me to go the community college route as a precaution. However, they are just not interested in helping me. Maybe overcrowding? Anyone else struggling with the choices? |

I think you are wrong. Experience plus education trumps everything. I work with a few guys that have a few more certifications than me, but can not troubleshoot their way out of a wet paper bag. Certifications mean you can take a test, it will get you in the door from an Human Resources person, but your peers and manager will expect actual experience in a live environment fixing real-world issues. Taking a certification class at New Horizon does not ensure you will pass the test either... |
