A broad knowledge of basic networking, security and server
A well established and practiced troubleshooting ability
Good Interpersonal skills.

On the last note -- The era of the freeky-geek is over outside a UNIX team. If you want to succeed as a network egineer you need to be able to converse with people on all levels, explaining technical concepts in lay terms when required and adapting to your audiance without patronising them or taking over their heads.

1. No How TCP works. (Three way handshake, what is neg in the handshake and other tcp stake info. This will help in reading packet traces.)
2. Know how protocols work (i.e OSPF, BGP, EIGRP, IS-IS) in more detail then ospf must be have an area 0.
3. How to troubleshoot problems (example where to start with a packet loss problem)
4. Interpersonal skills. (if you don't have any.) :)
