this is a question for all x ray techs out there who became nuclear medicine technologists, how hard was nuclear medicine school? please don't tell me to give up or there are no jobs because I already know that considering it is already hard enough to find a full time job and I am tired of my prn jobs. the bottom line is I just had an interview with the director with the nuclear medicine program and the program I am attending is the best in the state of nj, I just want some input from the x ray techs stand point of view. by the way did you guys find any jobs yet? the nuclear medicine students can reply also or grads or whatever. |

Before you spend 1-2 years of going to school for NM, I suggest that you first look at the job market. Yes, every NMT will tell you that the job market for NM is NON existent. There no jobs, and most of the jobs out there are getting lower and lower pay. Do your own research so couple of years down the road you are not disappointed finding out that there are no jobs. I know couple of new grads from last year, one of them has x-rays (5yrs) and as of today he is still looking for nuc med position that is at least PT. FT is almost impossible. The NM PRN positions are much worse than x-ray PRN. As a NM PRN you will only get called in if you want to take call every now and then, and during vacation time. You will be lucky to be able to get 300 hrs a year. Good luck, and again do your research before you waste time and money to go to NM school. |

^^^Thanks Charlie. I am actually learning CT scan right now for free though. So by the time I gaduate Nuclear next november, I'll take both registries together and increase my chances of getting a job. It helps too that in my state only a few students graduate from NM school. I know NM has a lot more indepth knowledge to cover than x ray but same as CT especially the contrast studies but I bet if you keep doing it over and over again, everything clicks why you do it and what you should do next like CT contrast of chest with and without contrast due to terminal lung cancer. |

I live in NJ and went to school for Nuclear Med there also. Even though there are few schools ( I think Muhelenberg may be closing ) , you are going to compete with graduates from NYC and PA. I have been looking for a full time job for over two years- there are none . Five hospitals have recently closed in NJ and all those unemployed techs flood our hospital every day with resumes. You are much better off learning CT and MRI. Well, if you still choose to go for it- good luck. |
