I am a New Grad nurse from Toronto trying to find my first nursing job in Florida. I was trained in Toronto at one of the best University/Colllege Collaborative nursing programs in Canada. We are given a lot of clinical hours to prepare us for work. I have a Bachelor's Degree in nursing, my BLS and is working on my ACLS. I also have my Visa Screening Certificate from the CGFNS and have completed all the necessary screenings for a Florida Nursing license. If a get a job, I will be given a temporary license so that I can work and also a TN working visa which is renewed every 3 years. However, with all this I am having an extremely difficult time finding a job, all the hospitals and agencies are asking for at least 1 year experience. How will I acquire experience if I cannot find a job. I am an excellent nurse, hardworking and hoping someone will see this comment and offer me a job. Does anyone have any suggestions, this is getting quite frustrated. I am not sure where to turn. Any help would be greatly appreciate any help, advice or information anyone can give.

Unfortunately I hear this a lot! I am currently training to be a nurse and often think that I chose the wrong career. The hospitals all say they need nurses, but when it comes down to it, they will not hire you, train you, or offer any suggestions to the new grads who have student loans to pay because they thought they were getting into a good career field. I think the main problem is that all the hospitals say they need RN's but the truth is they only want everyone to go into nursing so that they can have the upper hand and can do whatever they want. They treat their current staff horrible, overwork them as much as possible, force them to flex off whenever it's slow and therefore lose their livelihood, or lose their vacation time to make up for it. I think people should really do their homework before they believe all the hype (I mean the Bull) about healthcare being a great career field because the same goes for all the other healthcare professions...Respiratory, Rad Tech, Sono, etc. No jobs!!! The hospital administrators are all a bunch of liars and the schools don't care either, in fact they act like they are doing you a favor by training you to be a nurse even though they know good and well that their are no jobs waiting for you when you graduate so F them too! Sorry, but that is my two cents which I really ought to be saving seeing as I will owe my school thousands of dollars when I graduate, but I am sure things will be even worse then...Noooo Jobs and nobody willing to train the new grads, but wait, everyone says their is a huge demand for nurses...like I said...BULL^%&%!!!

I absolutely agree, Kevin. This has been quite a spin for me and a hard realization that I have been lied to. I may be hiring a lawyer.

Hi Mary, I apologize for my rant, but I really do feel that the hospitals who are only willing to hire experienced nurses are doing a huge disservice to the very people they should be supporting in their career development. And the schools (mine included) really do act like you are "lucky" that they accepted you into their program. In a way this is true because their are still huge lines of people, who just like me, bought in to the hype about the health care job market. It was only after I got in to school that everything started to become clear regarding my career choice. As you surely know, nursing school is hard to get into, and even harder to get through. Many people like myself have student loans that they must start paying back within six months of graduation, as well as families (and themselves) to support so this is no laughing matter. I do not know your personal situation but I did manage to find some new grad positions that hospitals were reqruiting for on indeed.com. You may have to consider relocating until you can get that experience under your belt and then move back home or wherever you really want to live. So try searching for new grad RN positions on indeed.com and hopefully you will be successful and find a great position. Please keep us all updated on your search. Best wishes and Good luck!

Hi Kevin,

I have a BSBA and an ADN as my educational background. I consider myself very well educated and include the BSBA on my applications every time. My clinical experience were in two different hospitals, including other environments, and my capstone I met the DON of the floor, received great compliments, and received a recommendation from my preceptor. The DON was contacted several times indicating to her my strong interest in working on her floor. Her excuse was that they have to hire their people first on scholarship programs, but the little they hire in this area I know for a fact her floor is short-staffed. A job opening on her floor came about recently, she did not contact me.

What's wrong with this picture? Is she afraid that I have more education than she does overall and is fearful of being replaced or is she preferencing or is the hospital posting jobs publicly with the intent of hiring internally, not giving the public a chance? There is something very wrong. I have applied to this same hospital multiple times in the last 5 months as well as applied to other hospitals multiple times. Still, no interviews. I have even received "Not Under Consideration" when I am presently working as a RN (under 12 hours a week), which this job I have now is only temporary. Never was interviewd for the job. The job did not state in its qualification that I need a lot of experience, only that I graduated from an accredited college with an associate's. As far as I am concerned, I qualified for that position. So, there is something they are doing in which their hiring practices are not considered un-biased. There's something not right.

Working only 12 hours a week as a RN does not pay off school loans when I have a mortgage to pay, utilities, and other expenses. I have no support or another's income in my household. Other facilities such as Skilled nursing LTC are saturated with LPNs mostly. They hire only one or two RNs.

Hi Mary, Yes it is a confusing situation because on the one hand even the dept of labor projects a huge demand for nurses even all the way through 2018, but for right now at least it seems hospitals are only looking for experienced RN's. I wish I had the answers as I would definitely share them with you. Like I mentioned earlier, there are postings on indeed.com for new grad RN's at hospitals all throughout the country. Maybe there is a hospital near you. Do not give up because I know that once you do find a position and get that year of experience under your belt, you will be able to work pretty much anywhere you want and have a great career. If you go to any hospitals website and search their job boards there are always lots of open RN positions so keep your chin up and keep going forward okay. I still have two years of school left until I graduate with my BSN. I am single, no kids or anything so I hope I can find a job right out of school. Don't really care where it is I just want that valuable experience. Keep me posted on how you are doing ok.

Hi everyone, I am a mature aged student and have just finished my years of training I went for a grad job but missed out, I found out i had an inner ear infection (I thought I was feeling stupid on the day) I work for a hospital as an AIN and did all my pracs there and they told me that I would get a job there at the end but it seems that noone tells the truth the Aust Government convinced me to re educate they said that there were too many positions and I woulold get at least 3 offers. I now have a hecs debt and no money I am about to loose my home becuase now the hosptial doesnt like to employee AIN's when they are registered RN's I was told there were lots of jobs there were 30 positions at the hospital I work I went for surgical and there were 5 positions and 70 students.I totally agree with all of you they are all telling lies. I ahve even spoken to the HR department where I work they are now classing me as a liability and unemployable since I didnt get the grad program all I ask is where and what am I suppose to do now. a mature aged person like myself doesnt take up education for the fun of it they have a real passion for nursing but now I find I will probably die with this passion never being realised. I have tried everything even applying to the rural areas even they wont take me on!!!!! they are always saying there is not enough nurese to people in the outback, but still I find I have come up against a brick wall. I know I will be a good nurse I carried a lot of the students through uni havine sessions to get them to pass exams, and they have jobs, what is going on here, do some of us have red target signs on our backs...............disappointed in the system

Yes, I think going into nursing is a mistake. I am going into 2 years since I graduated and can even get an interview. No matter where I go to apply, Nursing homes or hospital, I never get an interview. i believe its because i have no experiance. i mean where am I to get experiance if no-one wants to hire me. Everyone thinks I should lie on my application and say that I worked places that I didnt. I just cant do it, but I wonderful if my honesty will get me a job. I feel terrible to have gone to school for notthing. My only hope is the Lord to shower his blessing on me.

Is this true, I have a friend said to me if dont work on my License it will be taken away. I have never heard of that. Should a new nurse get a supervisor job as a (nurse supervisor) even though you are a new grad? by lying on the application saying that i have experiance that i dont.
