Alexandra Bartow RN in Ellensburg, Washington said: If you really want the hospital job then you have to be willing to fill out tons of applications and be flexible in where you live! I graduated in Dec '11 and passed the NCLEX a week later and will be starting a hospital position in a few weeks BUT I will be moving more than 150 miles away. I have seen a TON of jobs for new grads they are in home health, nursing homes, and assisted living but people are to busy whining about not being able to find a job because they are not applying for ones they don't want. I worked assisted living and home health and flu clinics to gain experience and even though it's not hospital experience it has gotten my foot in the door of a small community hospital. So everyone needs to buck up and do more then just fill out applications.......you do need to call, email, and go in person. You have to sell yourself for sure! VERY HELPFUL MS. BARTOW!!! THANKS!!!!!

I graduated in May '11. Have yet to find a job. 3.5 GPA, passed boards on the first try, all while working a full time job and 10-20 hours overtime on straight midnights. What have I learned about getting a job in the past year?
Basically, if you are planning on working as an RN after school, get out there and volunteer while still in school; work as a CNA while still in school; do anything in the health/hospital field to get either experience or time at a medical facility where you can "post" into an RN position. Otherwise, you'll have no experience and will be forced to join the other thousands of grads searching for the theoretical jobs that were supposed to have been available by this time...... |

I graduated in February, 2009, and passed the NCLEX-RN exam in early April. I finished at the top of my class, and thought I would begin a life; able to support myself and start over. I have been applying like crazy with absolutely no luck. I am an ADN, and know I would be competing with BSN's, but never thought it would be impossible to find a nursing job! I live in San Diego...there are many positions posted...I just don't qualify for any of them. I'm off to stock up on resume' paper and ink. I am an older graduate...and long for the days when you could actually meet face to face with a real person, and make that all important first impression. I'm on the brink of losing everything. I'll have to defer my student loans, as I cannot even keep up with the bills I already have. So much for the American Dream! Have you ever considered teaching? We are looking for a partner who is a RN. |

Hey Keith, After you had completed Nursing 101 at your school you were able to take the CNA StateBoards. You just have to submit a transcript from you school to the pa board of education for approval. Check out this link! www.portal.state.pa.us/portal/server.pt/community/nurse_aide_registry/14154 Hope this helps! :-) By the way, I am currently in an ASN program in my first semester. I haven't even graduated yet and I see the horrors to come. I frequent look for RN job openings just to get an idea on where I am goin to apply, and I notice that everyone is looking for atleast 1-2 years experience. So my plan right know is to take to CNA exam after I complete my first round of clinicals and start applying for CNA/PCT positions and hope that will make me more marketable by the time I graduate in 18mos. The good news is that I've seen some positions the appear to not require experience in residential facilities that deal with the MR/MH population (Mental Retardation/ Mental Health). Some of which have a $60,000 min starting salary. So I sugguest being open minded and lowering your standards as to where you would like to work. Because once you get some experience it seems the opportunities are endless :-) so Happy Job Searching to you all!! |

look for a position in Home Health care preferably one that will train you in vent, trach, g tube. Once you have training in that trifecta youre good to go..A lot of people dont want to do home health, but trust me, get that one year experience and watch the doors open after that.. |

I'd like to point out that nursing is nursing is nursing. Psych nursing is as valid as Acute Care nursing and as valid as Rural nursing and Correctional nursing. I do not like to see the phrase "lowering your standards" to take on a position in Mental Health nursing. I have heard on this forum and elsewhere that taking a position as a nurse in LTC is a step down from the lofty position of the acute care nurse. The face of nursing is changing but it seems to be taking a very long time to remove prejudices. It is not a step down, but a step in a slightly different direction where the nurse still deals with a lot of acute care and having to think on their feet. A nurse in the hospital usually works mainly in one area, getting to know ortho or telemetry or neuro very well. Home health nurses and LTC nurses have patients in all areas as well as having more interaction with family than the normal acute care nurse has. As with any profession, some people are better in one area than others. And we need them all. Do not belittle or invalidate the value of nursing positions outside of Acute Care. It devalues the entire profession. |

And there are people that hate hospital nursing....but there are places that have a verifiable shortage, here in Hawaii if you have any experience (even LPN) on the big island they are short, I was told that Alaska will pay moving expenses and your student loans if you stay for 2 years, they are hiring students before they graduate. So be willing to re-locate. I moved here from Washington State and only had assisted living nursing. |

I am so glad to hear that. I graduate in June. Our program is a 2-step program with LPN licensing in the first year. I got a job in February 2012 in home health and care for a trach-vent and g-tube infant. What possibilities are after this? |

I can see from your comment that you are one in the field because you have the patient's best interest at heart. People go in the nursing field for the money not for patient care. They want to do as less as possible but get paid the big bucks. I see it every day and it makes me sick to the stomach. |

Sad but true. I work with two fairly recent graduates (both BSN) and a long-time nurse. They/we are very dedicated to our patients. This has never been about money for me, though getting paid to do what you love is a bonus. And I do have bills to pay so I could not do it for free unless I had another job. |

I, too, am a new grad, I finished with my ADN in March, took NCLEX in May and have applied for over 30 jobs. I had one interview at a nursing home, and as I walked out the doors that day, I knew I had blown it. Several of my fellow classmates have already received jobs. I have a minor criminal record stemming from several years ago, that has haunted me since I applied to nursing school. However, it did not prevent me from getting my license. A fellow classmate of mine has the SAME exact criminal charges as me, and she just got offered a job with our top hospital here in Asheville. I have updated my resume, and whenever possible, I include a personalized cover letter. I am desperate for employment, as I have to start paying back student loans in September. Over half of my class has jobs already, or at least has received a few call backs, WHAT AM I DOING WRONG??? HELP!!!! |

Though I rarely advocate for a RN (newly graduated or not) to find work as a caregiver, I would like to say this... I have been working with a company (In-home care agency) since 2005 which has nurses (RNs, LPNs) amongst it ranks of caregivers. Many of them started out as CNAs and worked there while going to school. I was one of those. When I received my licensure as an RN, they hired me as a Nurse. But even in the ranks of the caregivers who are also licensed, this company has offered opportunities to some of them to work as RNs receiving RN wages while also continuing as caregivers. While they are a small company and cannot make these offers to every caregiver RN, they did hire two caregivers/newly graduated RNs to full-time nursing positions. One of them is now the Education Director, over-seeing all the training. The other handles In-home alcohol detoxification caregiving services (me). Both work with and supervise the care of in-home clients. This company also has a growing foot care program where a RN goes to facilities and client homes to do foot care. An RN doing foot care gets paid RN wages. My point is that you can find opportunities if you are willing to work for them. I will say that caregiving for in-home clients honed my nursing skills. |

After I graduated Nursing school, few months later I found out that I had a brain tumor. After 2 brain surgery, 2 eye surgery and a year long recovery. I was back on my feet, but lots of things had changed in me physically and mentally. I had Paralysis on left side of my body and on right side of my face. The paralysis on my body is gone now, then I took my NCLEX exam. I passed it and now I am staying hopeful that I will find a job soon. |

Home health nurses and LTC nurses have patients in all areas as well as having more interaction with family than the normal acute care nurse has. I couldn't agree with you more. I've done acute care (SICU, MICU, CVICU, cath lab)and home care as well. In home care YOU'RE IT. You're the resource person, it's very autonomous, however, I have been looking for a position in the hospital for a few years now and NOT ONE hospital has responded. 15 years in the hospital and you leave and they act as if you're a new grad. Actually, hospitals near me are hiring new grads with BSNs over experienced nurses like myself. At my wits end. Out of work a year now and don't know what to do. It seems that "home care" is looked down upon even though you care for vented patients, trached, G-tubes, ostomies. Just like the ICU without the drips and Swanz. God forbid they take maybe 4 weeks to re-orient you. Any suggestions |

I sure wish I was in Manhattan, because here in Kansas experience is key. I graduated in Dec. 2011 and still no job. I have put in 80 apps, 2 interviews only, I feel as if I am doing something wrong bt the problem is, here in Kansas we have nursing schools left and right. Major universities to small technical schools with an extreme amount of competition. You either have to have connections or have experience, but how do you obtain experience without working. I am frustrated. I have tried Home care, hospitals, clinics, smaller cities, everything you can think of with no luck. I am tired. Well, I almost had a job, but the manager said she didn't think I could handle the stress of ICU because I have five children and husband is chronically ill with renal disease. Are you kidding? I went through 4 1/2 yrs of Nursing school with all of that and a disabled child with cerebral palsy. please, no prob. I should be the one they want :-) |

I feel your pain. That is a LONG time to wait for a good job. I know that you have many obligations at home, but if you are willing to re-locate, Altru Hospital in Grand Forks is hiring. It is a great place to work, they believe in the holistic approach and want nurses to continue their education. They have many, many programs that would benefit both your husband, and your daughter. I truly think that you would thrive here. If you have any questions, email me. |
