Hey All RN's . . . the reason we cannot find jobs is that medical assistants are taking them. They now work for doctors offices, blood banks, dialysis centers. They are everywhere. If you donate blood, you will not see a registered nurse during the proceedure. When you go to the doctor you will not see an RN checking your pulse. And you can bet the medical assistant was not trained like an RN. They spend as long as 18 months in school, make as much as an LPN too. Even massively large doctor offices have one RN to supervise 25 medical assistants! We are definately loosing our jobs!! Doctors, administrators and HR staff will even tell you . . . they cannot afford to pay registered nurses!!! Down with Medical Assistants!!! |

I agree. I have tried to work in physician offices because I am tired of the stress I receive at work. I have around 40 patients at a skilled/long term facility and tons of meds to pass with very little time to actually spend with my patients. I feel like I am just a pill passer. I went back to school to get my RN to get our of this line of work from being an LPN and actually ended up doing the same thing I was doing before. Now, I can't seem to find any RN jobs in offices. Perhaps I should have just went for the MA. I have tried hospitals, but I am tired of having to take on my patients plus the LPN's because they can't call the doctors or do the iv's. I want to do home health, but apparently I'm not experienced enough they say. 10 years of nursing is not enough experience??? I am just tired of the entire nursing career and feel it's going to get worse. Seems like I am stuck in Long Term Care forever. Even School Nurse's are LPN's now. |

I live in N.Y. on Long Island. Homecare is one job you can usually get here. Most agencies want 1 year experience. Hospitals seem to be hiring nurses with BSNs. I went to nursing school in the early 70s...a 2 yr. program. Skills were barely taught. Book learning was very important! I did well with the book part. I graduated with very few skills. I don't know how to give an I.M..My greatest fear is placement and worrying that the needle I use will be to long. Silly, huh?, but true. Does anyone have any idea what I could do to get some skills without laying out a fortune? I have always managed to get a job where I don't have to give injections or need many nursing skills. I can't retire yet. |

Yes, there are two things you can do. In fact if it were me, I would do them both. First, sign up for an RN refresher program at a local community college or nursing program. Or check the internet for one, some are available online. Some even include an internship usually for about 40 hours which is a great marketing tool when looking for a job. Second, apply at the hospitals, most of them that hire nurses who need to brush up on their skills will give you extra time during your orientation to relearn what you need like giving shots IM. Most hospitals have special internships for nurses who have not practiced in a while but usually you have to be out of nursing for 5 years or so. Still, make sure they know you need extra time during orientation to relearn the basics. Most importantly they need to know that your greatest strength is knowing your weakness. Ask lots of questions during orientation, there is no such thing as a dumb question. Get into a RN reentry program it will do wonders for your confidence!! |

does anyone know a way to get an RN job if you have a restriction on your license that is temporary. Who hires nurses with restrictions??? Thanks for your help, I have been looking for 2 years and have had maybe 4 interviews. The first one went great until I told the interviewer about the restriction (Which would not have affected the job) and she instantly looked at me like I was some kind of monster! The interview concluded, and I got the rejection letter 30 minutes later! It was extremely depressing! |

I have already done an RN refresher course. I have exceptional IV skills but that is about it. We do have openings but I can't seem to find anyone willing to give me a chance. |

Well the restriction will stay according to the Ohio board of nursing until I start working and am monitored for a while. Then they will take it off. You would be surprised how many places require unrestricted license. I have almost looked everywhere. I am planning a large mailing of resumes by the end of January and actually I am an accomplished photographer and have decided to start a photography business. They make hundreds of thousands of dollars a year so I am going to give it a try and see what happens and in my spare time, I will look for a nursing job. That is the game plan for 2012. Wish me luck! |

It's a really good idea to start fresh with a new career such as photography. Go with it if you really enjoy it. That's the way to make a living--enjoying what you like. You can look for a nursing job along the way if you really feel that it is necessary. |

In NY prison jobs are coveted. The pay is good. The job is easy. It is very safe. I tried to get a prison job after a friend of mine retired from it...No Luck |

Some refresher classes are expensive but others are fairly affordable. It is important to continue education especially in such a competitive industry. |

How about New Grads with BS in nursing? No jobs in New York for us. They want at least 1 year experience. If they don't give us a chance to get hired we will not have it. If you know who is hiring NEW Grads let me know please! |

Hello everyone. I just completed getting my RN license in Texas. I have many years of experience in my country, but I have never work in the US. I am working on my English and I want still in my field. If anyone knows somebody in the Houston area who can give a opportunity I will appreciate it. |
