Hello
I do not mean to discourage you but as of now hospitals are not filing for F1 students on OPT.There are very stringent conditions that the immigration has placed on hospitals so they would rather employ a citizen or a legal permanent resident.A lot of us F1 students have exhausted our options here in the US. I graduated almost a year ago and still no paying job. Recruiters I spoke to do not want to hire me because the OPT is for a year and after that I have to leave the country. I got a residential facility to hire me for free so I can get the one year experience and buy time to enable me work my way to Canada or Europe. I pray that you have better luck finding a sponsor than some of us. it does not hurt to try. If you do get a sponsor just make sure they hire you for a supervisory position. The lawyer I spoke to (Dyer Immigration law firm) said that they still issue H1b visa for nurses if it is an advanced degree or a supervisory position. Wish you the best

Hi Sheila. I passed the boards (California) last year but can't find a job for most of them are asking for at least a year of experience. You have mentioned that a residential facility hired you for free? did you mean free training? I am willing to work without pay as long as they can train me for free.. may i ask where is this facility located? my email ad is heymona33@yahoo.com. Thanks in advance for your help.

Agency I talked said they can sponsor me Green card if I pay the fee (also said reimburse the fee when I get Green card), but it's going to take two and half years. It's just a bad time for us now, but it might be different after the President election this year. I am still looking for anyone can help me. I'm also trying to get information working in Canada, but it's more complicated than here USA.

I'm a international student and will take nclex next month. My opt will start 10th february. Can u tell me which agency ur talking? Please let me know that...

Well, then I guess your case was lucky in some ways.. cuz if you graduated from your school in Aug 2010, doesn't it mean that your legal period of staying in the U.S. ,by using OPT, was 'supposed' to be from Oct 2010 to Oct 2011,,, with job searching period given from Oct 2010 to Jan 2011??

I graduated in May 2011 that I thought my OPT period had to start from July 2011 (after 2 months of grace period) and thought it was the 'latest date' that I could pick... Unlike you who had enough time for NCLEX and job searching, I have to prepare/pass the NCLEX and find a job within this upcoming 3 months period (July-Oct)...giving me a lot of headache..!
I envy your case a lot! not only that but you already have a job awaiting..! very very good for you!!:)

Hi!
Yes I got hired but they were not able to sponsor me so, after a month I was let go from the hospital. I talked to the hospital's lawyer and many more and they all said it was impossible to get a working visa as an RN, unless it's a manager position, etc. which is unrealistic and unsafe due to lack of experience.

Therefore, I had to leave US.

Good luck on your hunt.

Hello.
I read all previous posts and comments. I felt that everyone was in the same boat. I am an international student, got my BSN and an RN license in 2008. I saw an immigration lawyer. She said I would not be able to get a H1B visa as a regular nurse even though I find a sponsor. I could get a H1B visa if I have an advanced practice nurse such as a nurse practitioner, a nurse midwife...etc, if I have a nurse manager or supervisor or if I am s specialist. She gave me two options at that time, either going back to my country or going back to school. So I did go back to school. I got MSN last August and just passed a NP board exam. I have looked for a job but have not heard from any hospitals and clinics.
With current economic downturn, both American and international new nurses have a difficulty of finding a job. I want to share the following link of medscape.

Hi,
Are there any schools, which have BSN to MSN programs near where you live? In order to sit for the Nurse Practitioner certification exam or work as a Nurse Practitioner in your state, you should have a master degree. You need to complete BSN first and then MSN. Some MSN programs may require one or two years of nursing experience. But I believe some schools have BSN to MSN program with which you will get both BSN and MSN degree at the graduation.
Please check nursing programs near where you live.
As I said on previous comment, we are in the same boart.
I wish for your success!!

Hi y'all,
I have been international student for almost 7 years and finally I got a professional job as a RN in the U.S. I graduated with Bachelor degree in Business Management 3 years ago. As I have personal calling for Nursing and people said hospital can sponsor me a greencard, I went to nursing school instead of Master degree in Human resource. I still remember how much honor i am in my pinning ceremony and such a great feeling when I care my patients. However, this is time I need to work on my legal status. My OPT will end in this July 2012 and my hospital let me know last week that they do not sponsor me any type of working visa. I have contribute my time, money, dedication to the nursing career here in this country and now I got rejected. Reading all the previous post, I feel very upset and unfair for well-educated and dedicated people like us to be treated in this way. I've been working overtime voluntarily as much as they need me. I would like to continue my master degree but without working as a RN, there is no way I can support financially myself through grad school. I still have a lot of debt that I had from 2 years of BSN. I went through all the stress for 7 years already. There is no need to go through it again for nothing. I'm looking for any RN jobs in other countries which really needs Nurse. If anybody here know any information about nursing job in other English speaking countries, please help me. God bless y'all.

Hi Tristant,
I'm in the same boat too.I know that you can still work as a RN while you go back for your master's. You only have to find a school that can provide you a CPT. You can look it up more info about CPT. It's just like an OPT. I'm pretty sure your hospital can still hire you with a CPT. I hope this is helpful for you. G'luck.

Hello
I hate to sound pessimistic but. H1B visas for foreign trained as well as US trained nurses is very difficult right now. Employers, hospitals are not filing due to restrictions placed on them by immigration. check other posts on this forum and see for yourself. If you know someone who can hire you for administrative position maybe it will work. Good Luck

Congratulations on passing your boards. I hate to be the bearer of bad news but it is tough out there for F1 students to get jobs. even if you get a job under your OPT, most hospitals are not sponsoring. I was working pro bono for six months on OPT before getting a job with a hospice agency in georgia. They filed for H1B visa for me, but it was rejected 3 weeks ago. They said nursing is not considered a professional occupation because a BSn is not the only requirement to practice. I have 60 days to leave the country. The only good thing is that i have european citizenship and I got the 12 months experience needed to register in the board of nursing in europe. Don't give up. keep trying hopefully you can find a sponsor. Good luck
Ps: you are not alone. read other posts on this forum; there are a lot of us going through hell. another option will be to go into a master's program to continue staying here

We are not to work for free and those American nurses you are talking about who can't find jobs basically because they are:
1- LPNs and not willing to get BSN
2- Not working as hard as foreign nurses
3- too picky to choose specific job and do not appreciate the job offers.

It is not hospitals don't want to sponsor. It is because the government/ immigrant service have been holding the previous cases of sponsors which slow down the process. And the government blame for the economy and high unemployment rate.
Good luck on looking for agency who willing to sponsor. I will work my last week next week then packing for my new adventure. Life is a journey, not a destination.

Hi Reeya
If the Hospital is willing to apply for a green card, let them do it in that case it will be an immigrant work visa. It might mean that you have to leave the country and come back. check with your lawyer first. As a nurse without a BSN you do not qualify for a H1B visa as this is for skilled professionals and nursing has been removed from the immigration list of skilled professions. So all nurses applying for H1B are rejected. I was rejected too, I was F1 too. All I needed was a year's experiences to enable apply to practice in England. I got that and now I am in England. If you can get your BSN, have the hospital employ you as an administrator or supervisor of some sorts, then maybe you have a chance to get the H1b. Take courage you are not alone. I was once there, I am glad I left the US. If I did not leave I would not have known there were better opportunities here for me.

As I have personal calling for Nursing and people said hospital can sponsor me a greencard, I went to nursing school instead of Master degree in Human resource .

You should try finding a sponsor in England. Since you have such fantastic qualification, there are international recruitment agencies here that may be willing to help you relocate. To practice as a nurse in England you do need the one year experience before you can apply to be registered with their nursing board. as an F1 In the US you are only as good as the amount of money you can give; when that runs out, everyone shuts you out.

Thank you Sheila. Your words mean a lot to me and Im glad there are many people feel the same way about this situation. I am disappointed with U.S government about immigrant law. First of all, they dont consider Nursing as a Science even though my degree is called Bachelor degree of Science in Nursing. Secondly, they let illegal mexican people stay and work for jobs non-require skills or knowledge. Third, they said unemployment rate is high so they dont offer foreign nurses jobs--> this is the most stupid political game. Many people said american nurses are out of job but that is true becuz they are just LPNs or CNAs who dont want to go further for RNs and BSN. My patients are really upset when they know Im leaving and they said there are american nurses do not deserve to stay here better than me.
However, it is what it is. I tried my best to give them what I got. If they dont need me then I leave. This country forget its root that it is a land of opportunity where their ancestors found and buillt it. And now they shut the door for others.
My problem is my OPT expired after I worked for 10months (i made mistake when chosing the day of beginning OPT when I applied)However, I worked extra shifts day and night a lot, way way a lot so I hope they can mAke up to 1 yr experience.
. I will leave this country for good in 4 days. I found an agency receuiting for nurses in Australia and been waiting for job offer over there but still have no any hospital offer me a job becaus my 10 months experience. I was looking in England too but I found they prefer Female nurse than Male nurse and they dont have much job offer for Med/Surg.
As you said, i will never know somewhere else is better until I leave this place. So i believe there will be a hospital willing sponsor me for my hard wOrking and passion for nursing

I've read a lot of your posts-

The United Stated is in a recession..so work is hard to come by. Because of this hospitals are not willing to sponsor nurses when they have 100 citizens standing in line waiting for a job. Sorry that some of you are mad that hospitals aren't sponsoring you-but they don't have to.

Try Canada-I hear they are in desperate need of nurses.

Thank you so much Sheila.. one of my friends get H1b approve Supervisor Position without BSN. USCIS said There is no need BSN On Nursing Job. I have more then 3 years of Exp. here in USA and if i want to apply in england. can i work there as RN ? should i have to give exam like Nclex fore Nurse License.

again Thank you so much for reply me.. i really appreciated for your time..

Dont get me wrong. I didnt say US owe me anything. Actually im thankful to have opportunity getting education here. Im just unfortunately sad for my hard work is not recognized. If you are in the foot of international student and know how much we pay for tuition fees, scholarship restriction and part-time working restriction, you will understand what we feel.

The NMC( nursing and midwifery council) here in England requires for foreign trained nurses to have a minimum of a BSN before they can be registered, regardless of experience. They also do not recognize NCLEX in the UK. What they do is like an endorsement. They ask for your transcript of training, two work references, a complete physical health check and a license verification from the boards of nursing. Along this you have to have notarized copies of degrees, certificates etc. When approved, you have to go for a mandatory 2o days training and depending on their decision, you may or may not need to do a 3-6 months supervised training period. it does not hurt to contact them and inquire if your years of experience can considered. I know the shortage here right now is for perioperative nurses and NICU nurses. Here is the link.www.nmc-uk.org/Registration/Joining-the-register/Trained-outside-the-EU--EEA/. you will also find their phone number on their website on the ontact us tab. Hope this helps. If you have any questions feel free to email me. best of wishes
