NURSING HOME ADMIN IN TRAINING in Florida 34 months ago |
Hello, I live in Southwest Florida, and am looking for an administrator-in- training program in the Port Charlotte/Punta Gorda or Fort Myers areas. I reside in Charlotte county. I am currently a student in a masters program in heath administration and would like to become licensed as a nursing home administrator in the state of Florida. If there is anyone who is able to help me gain such experience, I will be more than happy to forward my resume and other credentials. Thank you. |

I am in the same boat. I have a doctorate in health administration and am looking for AIT in Fort Worth Texas. I am also wondering if I am required to take all the course work or could it be waived based on my current credentials? Can the AIT be done while still employed full time? If anyone has some answers, I would appreciate it! Thank you! |

This is where you can get information on the national exam in addition to any requirement required by your state. Good luck! |

I just completed my bachelors in Health administrator, i am currently working at Arnold Palmer childrens hospital as an ER secretary. I would like to go on to get my NHA license, and i am wondering where can i find a list of preceptors in the area, and if i meet the qualifications to do this. Everyone i have met seem to have their masters, but i am still interested in the program. |

Hi all, I really would like to network with people that can help me get a foot in the door to finding a AIT program in either Florida or North Carolina. I have a few questions. I understand that while having a master’s degree may be preferred, it is not required. Can someone confirm this? I have a bachelor’s degree in Business Management and have 15 years of professional experience, but not in a health care setting. This would be a career change for me and has always been my passion. Can someone share with me how to go about locating a facility or company with AIT program? I have done some research so far - and have seen a list of facilities with contact information for Florida - but is contacting them the way to go? Do they have a job training posting usually listed? Is a preceptor what they call the company / facility that is doing the training? I know an administrator in California and she loves her job but didn't seem to be able to assist much in my state. If I go to one state to train, can I take the test in another state to work? Any advice would be very much appreciated. Thanks in advance! |

The preceptor is the administrator doing the training. Some of the major companies have AIT programs advertised - Golden Living (Beverly), Sunbridge, Extendicare, look on their websites. I just contacted the preceptors on the list the state board gave to me to find my program. The major companies may have better programs, paid programs, but they are difficult to get into. Preceptors do the training in exchange for continuing education credit. I doubt that you can take an administrator in training program in one state to get licensed in another. Each state has their administrator in training program set up differently. Some require more hours than others and some also include class room hours (administrator's university). Since each state has their own rules contact your state board to find your answers. |

Being a newbie in this field can be tough, so I appreciate you sharing information. I will be looking up the info you suggested and go from there. Now that you mention it - the thought of training in one location and then taking the test elsewhere sounds crazy and foolish...lol. I am going to concentrate on Florida and take it from there. Again, thank you for your response. |

Here's a link to the Florida Board of Nursing Home Administrators. Click "Preceptor List for AIT Program" and it will take you to an Excel spreadsheet of all active preceptors in the state of Florida. |

The only thing is you will have to do one year internship compared to a holder of a masters degree when you would be required to do 6 months internship. |

The list you have should be a preceptor list, which is an administrator that have taken the required course to become a preceptor. This is simply NHA that will sponsor you in the AIT program, and is listed with your application to the state as the one providing your training. You need to call the Administrators on the list untill you find one willing to accept you. There are more that are not paying than those that do.

Hi. I currently live in the Capital Region Area, NY. I've been looking for a Nursing Home Administrator who can accept me for AIT training since October 2009 but all in vain. I located to this area early 2010 thinking that i could be lucky but not yet. I have approval from NYS-DOH I was wandering if anyone has connections or connect to the right people who can facilitate me to achieve this goal. It is one hard thing that i'm encountering at the moment and it hurts to waste time waiting in vain. thanks you. |

It depends on the state where are planning to obtain your license. Since you have a Bachelor's degree in Management, you will need about 15credits of healthcare administration courses, for example, in Rhode Island. Yes, you are right, a Master's degree is not a requirement but now a days, having it is an advantage. i am a Reg Nurse and obtained my Master's degree in Healthcare Admin, passed my boards in june 2011 but still having difficulty getting a job because most employers require experience, another problem once you obtain a license. There's a lot of jobs out there, it's just a matter of networking and whom you know. good luck |

Natalie in Cape Coral, Florida 9 months ago |
Since you have worked with both manor care and life care center, it would be to your advantage to call their human resources departments for AIT positions. I know manor care has paid air positions with two year commitment upon completion. In addition, check the state regs to ensure you will be qualified to take the nab and state exams- meaning that you have met education and experience requirements (if applicable). |

Great, thank you Natalie for the info. I will call the HR departments and see if they have anything available. I'm very anxious to get started down this career path. If you do hear of any other opportunites with other companies, please let me know! |
