Hi everyone. I'm finishing my AIT and plan to take the NHA exam in late August. For those of you who passed, how long did you prepare? What materials did you use? I have the watermelon book from AHCA and the NAB study guide.

Has anyone completed the onlilne James E. Allen courses? on www.longtermcareeducation.com? I saw that they were around 600 dollars total. Was it worth it?

I actually studied for two months because I was doing my AIT at the same time. I actually have some study materials from when I took it in 2007. I can let you copy it if you promise to bring it back. I also have some study materials for texas and louisiana state boards that might help you. Email me

Hi there Ruyi,
How is your hunt going? I am very excited to get my first job!! I have a great deal of experience in both SNF and RCFE although I have never managed a lot of people in my past positions. What do you do and if you have the same issue as myself how do you plan to over come it during the interview process?
I have found a couple networking possibilities in Long Beach and Cerritos this month, let me know if you are interested in attending.

Hi Brieanna,
Thanks for your reply and I am still hoping though I have the feeling that I am not pursuing this job, the right way. Currently, I am depending on recruiting firms and all the jobs they have, is those needing experienced NHA. Majority of the facilities are willing to take the risk of hiring a new NHA.
Congratulations on your new job and I believe with your long-term experience in the healthcare industry is a plus for you. It will help boost your management skills in terms of implementation strategies.
On the question of how to "over come the interview process" I should be the one to ask you that since, you secured yourself a job already. I am very bad with interviews; I can get very nervous and full of wishes during the interview process. I don’t like to exaggerate my skills and abilities but that is what they want to hear.
My qualifications are LVN, BSC, and MBA.
And thanks for the invitation, when will they be taking place

I have two books for sale and study guides that would help with studying for the NAB Exam. The study guides are free. I recently passed the NAB exam on the second try and no longer need these materials.

The first one is the National Association of Boards of Examiners Long Term Care Administrators book. This includes the NAB Code to get access to the website to help with studying for the exam. This is the blue/watermelon book. $45.00

The second is The Licensing Exam Review Guide in Nursing Home Administration Practice Question Book. It includes over 800 practice questions. $25.00

I also have multiple study guides if anyone is looking for them.

Email me at dvidetic@hotmail.com

Thanks,

Dennis Videtic

I recently did not pass the NHA federal exam. I used the NHA examination study guide "fourth edition". It seemed like the test was in no way similar the the study guide questions in the book. in fact the study guide questions were a little misleading as to the content of the actual test. does anyone have any suggestions on what guide i should be using. I cant afford to keep retaking the test so any help would be appreciated.Ive worked really hard for 6 months "no pay" and money is starting to run thin. Please help! i need some good advice for preparing for the national exam.

The only thing that will help you pass the exam is reading the Principles of Long Term Care book from cover to cover. And I mean really reading it, not skimming. I read the entire book from cover to cover. It took 7 full days, and I passed with a 139. Good Luck!

hi kierra, I just took the NHA exam today and passed (second try). here are my suggestions. you need to purchase the NHA study guide from the nab website. most of the test material is centered around that book. if you do, really focus on the glossary terms, laws, financial calculation, federal regulations and the PRACTICE QUESTIONS at the end of each chapter. I used the fourth edition of the study guide, but i think they have a fifth edition available now. You will also find on the website a book entitled "the principles of healthcare administration" is a really big book with alot of words....some people find it helpful but i didnt. if anything its an "ok" supplement to the NHA study guide at best. you will also do yourself a favor and look into getting "the licensing exam review guide in nursing home administration" by james allen, its really helpful....tons of PRACTICE QUESTIONS. I lucked out and found a copy at my local library. I stress practice questions because im a really bad test taker. the practice questions are great because they are from actual previous exams. the practice questions prepare you for how the actual exam is going to word questions. you may even luck up and find one or two those questions on your exam...hint. As you may have heard there are several versions of the NHA exam, dont let that scare you. each version covers the same content, just worded differently. finally, and I cant stress this enough, take a NHA review course if you can find one in your area. John Cirn who actually writes the financial chapter of the NHA study guide holds a review class in Illinois. just google his name and you will find it. its worth the money and time....at least for me it was.

part two of two
the route i took to pass was expensive but it worked for me, as i said before...im a not a good test taker. at the very least get the NHA study guide, its 130 dollars but its cheaper then taking a 300 dollar exam twice, trust me! you have got quite a bit a time before you exam and you will need every minute of it. the hardest thing for me was getting into study routine, but once i did i found myself thinking and going over test material all day long. REMEMBER: glossary terms and definitions, laws/federal regulations, financial calculations(all of them), and practice questions.
if you need anymore help let me know. im going to have a celebratory drink now...

p.s the test isnt as hard as everyone says, but anything is hard if you arent prepared for it. "preparation diminishes the need for luck". i never tell people good luck, ill just say happy studying ( ;

The watermelon book as it is being called because it is red in color is "The Principles of Health Care Administration," by Joseph Townsend, Winborn Davis, and Robert Haacker ISBN: 978-0-929442-78-5

A 2009 Update is NOW AVAILABLE (#2501PP)from ppandp.com,Professional Printing and Publishing Inc., the book's publisher. It is now blue in color. It is $105.50 + postage and handling.

New 2009 The Principles of Health Care Administration has been revised and updated by author Joe Townsend. This book continues to be the most comprehensive long-term care publication available today. All five Domains are discussed in detail and there is a listing of Acts, Rules, and Regulations for long-term care.

Purchasing the earlier edition you will find at inflated prices of sometimes $300.00 + dollars. Don't waste your $$$ on the earlier edition. If you majored in long-term care or healthcare administration your professor/instructor should have used this book! My professor did. Hope this helps and good luck.

I passed the Federal exam on 3/8/12 after failing it the first time . Scored better the second attempt . I feel that if you just calm yourself down prior to taking the test you will do fine . My administrator gave me the best advice the night before . "Its in your head , now just put it in paper " . Now on to the State Exam . Any pointers on what to study ?
