California doesn't offer straight license reciprocity, but it will allow an administrator to work under a provisional license. This gives you the opportunity to work for up to a year, during which time you must take and pass the California NHA exam.

There are a number of good on-line sources for information about California NHA licensure, as well as first class exam-prep resources. Here are a few to start with:

• Nursing Home Administrator Guide Book
www.qchf.org/NHA0906online.pdf
This was an attempt to compile all the relevant background and application resources into one document. Among the gems you can find in this booklet are lists of the materials the state exam are based on, as well as web sites from which they can be downloaded.

• California Nursing Home Administrator Program Web Site
ww2.cdph.ca.gov/pubsforms/forms/Pages/NursingHomeAdministrator.aspx
This is the best source for the current versions of state forms and data sheets.

• California Association of Health Facilities/Quality Care www.qchf.org/nursinghomeadm.php
Health Foundation NHAP Resource Page
This is a resource page from the state nursing home industry association.

• AIT Exam Prep
www.aitexamprep.com/
This is a consulting business that offers exam prep materials, educational resources and exam review sessions.

Reply: You have to apply for a Provisional License in California, then take a terrible state exam. I would recommend contacting an exam mentor to help outline and study for the California Exam. The exam is a bear.
I am licensed in MI, VA, CO and CA. California is the worst. I would not go back to California and work as a Nursing Home Administrator. The State of California is in really bad shape. Also, look out for companies that will bring you to California and do not provide full hiring disclosure. After being employed in California, I found out I was the 15th Administrator in 8 years. After I was termed for using the word "Ebonics", the Department of Justice came to my home and showed me 26, 8 X 10 pictures of the owners and managers. Ask if Accounts Payable is checking Med A submissions utilizing a Triple Check process. If so, they probably have been involved in Medicare Fraud.

Hope this helps you.
