I have called everyone on the list that the Dept. of Health gives you...and there are no AIT preceptors on it. I have a Bachelors in Health Administration, and iam a liscenced Phlebotomist, i have also been in the nursing field for over 13 years as a CNA. I would love to do an externship as an AIT in Florida (Fort Myers). Help...someone!

I was an AIT preceptor with Beverly Enterprises and usually the big chains have preceptors. Have you researched the biggest chains (ie. Beverly Enterprises or google long term care chains and start making calls to see if they have an AIT program, which they should and submit your resume to them to see if you can get on board their AIT program. I had to try a one time in Southern California before I landed an AIT position in Central California. Good Luck.

I am not from this area in Florida. My recommendation to you would be to contact nursing homes in your area that are of interest to you. When I moved to Ocala, I contacted local administrators and they were very helpful in pointing me in the right direction. Personally, I would start with your local Florida Health Care Association President. She would probably be a great resource to what you are looking for. Here is her contact information:

Susan King, President
Rehabilitation & Healthcare Ctr. of Cape Coral
Email: sking@filtc.com

Good luck to you!

Lionel, You may want to contact the Board of Nursing Home Administrators and the Florida Health Care Association.

I am looking for a nursing home preceptor for the ait program. Have been a registered nurse for 15 years and have spent most of that time in long term care. How do I find a preceptor. I am willing to move if the need arises.

You may want to check with your Board and healthcare association for your state.

I am also looking for a preceptor for the AIT program. I am a LPN and I've been one for 10 years. I was a CNA before I became a nurse. I've been in long term care about 15 years. I have been calling everywhere and still haven't had any luck yet. But I refuse to give up!

There are currently 398 preceptors in Florida. I don't know what list you have, but here is the current preceptor list. I know some of these administrators personally and I assure you that they are preceptors. Here is the link to the current list. It is an Excel file so you must have Microsoft Excel or download Excel Reader to view it. I tried to paste the comments in this message, but this forum won't allow phone numbers:

I am also in Fort Myers. I became licensed in November and I got the first administrator job that I applied for, in the 1st week of December. Please understand that I was very fortunate and that this is VERY rare for this to happen. Some people go for months or even a couple of years trying to land their first administrator job. Some of the large corporations occasionally offer a paid AIT position, with placement afterward, but the pay is low and you must agree to move ANYWHERE in the state that they need you once you are licensed. Other than than that, be prepared to do the 6 month AIT program for no pay. There are preceptors in Lee, Charlott, and Collier counties, within commuting distance for you, but you must interview well and be very personable and convey sincerity and dedication to convince a preceptor to invest time in you.

Lionel, I wish you good luck, but don't get your hopes up too much. The law is very specific, and your experience must include a year of experience in which you supervise every department in a skilled nursing facility. I have met a couple of the board members and listened to some board meetings and I don't think they will bendon this. But good luck anyway. Who knows?

AIT Preceptor in Delray Beach, Florida

I am a preceptor for the state of Florida. It is my opinion that preceptors are hard to get for AIT training is because the Board put expectations on the AIT and precetor that are over and above the rules and regs set by the state and the Board of Nursing Home Administrators. To be blunt: It's not worth the hassle to take on an AIT.

I think the Board recognizes problems with the AIT program. The Florida Board of Nursing Home Administrators has formed a task force to address many of the issues. The taskforce will have two telephone conference calls and then a meeting on July 22, 2010 to address concerns. Please note, the conference calls and the meeting are being noticed for the public. The dates of the telephone conference calls and the call in numbers are posted or will be posted on the Board's website. The Board will hold a regular meeting on July 23 in Fort Lauderdale, Florida. Please share this information, so that all interested parties can attend the meeting and conference calls to express their opinions.

It should be noted, the board members are volunteers and are giving their time with the hopes of providing for our residents and to help administrators be successful.

"To whom much is given, much is expected". The board members recognized the time, energy and effort required of preceptors and within the last year and 1/2, preceptors had an increase of CEUs from 5 hours to 10 hours.

Hello,
I have been researching on-line and have been calling nursing homes in my area in MS, but haven't yet found a preceptor that has the funds within their facility to train me. I currently have a MBA in Healthcare Administration (management)from Colorado Technical University and a BHA in Healthcare Administration from Belhaven University. I also have am currently working as a home health aide. Are there any other options towards receiving licensure as a Long-term Healthcare Administrator or certifications in this area?

The problem in Florida is that there are almost twice as much NHAs as available jobs. I have been looking for a job for 3 years, but companies prefer someone with experience. As a new NHA with no experience, I have almost no chance to get job even as an asistant NHA. I have been to numerous interviews and I get the same answer,"we prfefered to hire a candidate with NHA experience". It's a catch 22, how can I get a job without experience? How can I get experience without a job? I don't think creating more AIT programs will solve the shortage of NHA jobs in Florida.

Yes..there is a list...but the question is..When you call the Preceptors, are they responsive? They either tell you they are not precepting anyone, or the number you call is not correct. I even got as far as someone guaranting me that they would precept me, then they changed their number the very next day. But i will stay optomistic and try this list!

You may want to inform the preceptors that they receive 10 CEUs for each AIT they train. Many are not aware of the CEU hours.
