Hi everyone! I'm curious to know the schooling, accurate job description, and salary of both an OT and PT. Which do you find more rewarding and why? I have heard of people being both. Is this possible? If so, can it be accomplished close around the time it takes to complete one, with the exception of a few courses? Are the courses similar? Do both feilds crossover at all? Any information on any of this would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!!!

OT in Tualatin, Oregon said: You can just be a PT and easily figure out whatever it is that OTs do --- once you do some OT for a while, you'll be happy to stick with PT. OT just overlaps with PT and SLP - doesn't really have real boundaries and definition - just lots of confusion and uncertainity about what it is that you really do - and guilt for billing for things that aren't really that necessary. Just fyi.

Thanks for the Reply. Is it still possible to be both? I want to go to school for OT however, I've been told being both makes you more in demand. Also, I am slightly confused as to how long the schooling really is. From what I've been told, in two years you become an OTA and in four, an OT. Is this correct? Or is it only when you reach your masters, do you become an OT?

Would you suggest an Online course for OTA? Where I live there isn't a school that Offers it and is nearby. Although, I would assume class time is better.

I don't know what happened in your career, Michael, that made you decide to leave O.T., but I'm glad you did. What you're saying about O.T. to "Ruric" is false.
Occupational therapists are much more equipped to handle the demands of a rehab career than P.T. In fact, P.T.'s will probably be extinct in a decade since they are pricing themselves out of the market and trying to duplicate what O.T. offers. Insurance companies are covering O.T. because it is so much more practical and cost-effective. The confusion to which you refer is the problem of P.T. practicing O.T., because doctorate programs in P.T. mostly cover O.T. principles and techniques.
