I'm looking into applying for Suny Downstate Medical Center, so I was wondering if anyone knows if this school is competitive, and what are they looking for? I saw the min requirements on the website but I don't know if they are enough to land a seat in the school. Thanks for your help! |

It is an extremely competitive school to apply for, however it is a fantastic program. I had applied and gotten in as my first choice but life took me to another school and state. I agree that they look for diversity but I believe that pertains to the type of person you are not necessarily by religion. What I did and recommend is go and take a tour of the school and schedule an appointment with either the chairperson or faculty to discuss with them what they look for in their candidates, how to best prepare etc. I sat in on a class and talked with students and with faculty it was a good experience. Ultimately be yourself and let any interviewer know why you want to be an OT and why you would be an asset to their program. Best of luck in any program you apply for! |

Thank you for both of your comments! They were very helpful in helping me get a better picture of OT schooling at Downstate. I did go to an information session and learned quite a bet on preparation too. Thank you again! |

guys, please let me know what my chances are of being accepted to Downstate SUNy OT program if I have a business degree, BBA and no healthcare experience but I will have everything else by 2012. Also, what did you hear about OT as a career and how financially rewarding is it? How much do OT's can start from and what's the salary cap based on different setting? But please let me know if you personally know someone not from Internet sources since they are soooo vague. Thank you

Guys, Based on your experience, do you think Occupational Therapy is a good career choice? I want to help people and enjoy doing that but this is a second career so I only have doubts financially if it is rewarding since it needs to pay off in the end: the loan and all. People say you need to choose a career based on what you like - of course! But we are not going to work for free, its just ridiculous, we need to be rewarded nicely for doing the good. So this is my point. Also I am worrying about this healthcare reform, the democratic approach toward socialism and all and how the reimbursement for OT will change the profession, also the competition between PT versus OT and how insurance companies will pay the services of OTs in the future. Any thoughts? Please share! :-) |

OTDude, would you mind elaborating on the salary? When I do a search of starting salary for OTs in NYC, I find wide ranges from $40,000-80,000. I also would like to know what moves are the best for making a high salary. Thanks. |
