Returning to Work After Three Years of Disability |

I have been on Disability for three years. I have recovered from the worst of the medical issues, but I am still in a wheelchair and legally blind. I was a top-notch Administrative Assistant, but I lost my job because I simply could not do it at the time. Now, after three years, I'm ready to go back to work (boy, am I ever ready - I'm bored out of my mind sitting at home). I am working with the Department of Rehabilitation on getting started again, but I am afraid my multiple disabilities will put employers off, especially the visial impairment. The fact that I know I can do the job with the appropriate adaptive equipment doesn't seem to quell that fear. Also there's that little matter of a three-year gap in my resume. Are potential employers going to look at that and think I'm a hopeless case? I've spent a long time thinking I was unemployable, and I guess I'm thinking that employers will think that, too. Suggestions? |
