Online Marketing job with Social Gaming Companies

Social Gaming companies is an area that I have interests in. I have done my research and keeping up with the trends within the industry. There are some Social Gaming companies that initiated contact with me regarding Online Marketing positions. And when we talked I was always told that it is not necessary to have game industry experience. It's great that I have the knowledge in this vertical. When it comes down to the final selection phase of the interview process, I was always told I met all their requirements, except for the gaming industry experience. If this is the case, who does people who never worked in the gaming industry get the job with these gaming companies?
