I graduated last year with a BSBA and am now working as an admin assistant at a small company. I want to switch into legal field but most of the positions i am looking into require some type of experience. I am thinking about taking a paralegal certification course but the ones I am finding are not ABA approved. Is ABA approval a requirement? What is the scope of finding a job without an approved course?

Right now, my first choice is the course offered through Rutgers University. It's a 6-week course with classes every Sat & Sun. Does anyone know if this is a good course or have suggestions for other certification courses to help me get my foot into the legal field?

Although that's a very good school, I have a Paralegal Certificate, that took me a year to get and interviewed with 2 law offices and in a professional manner, they advised me that a Paralegal Certificate didn't teach you how to be a Paralegal and I have to agree with them. Loved the law courses, but there should have been more training in what the actual paralegals do.

Paralegals with experience are having trouble finding jobs, so the likelihood of your finding one without any is next to none. Besides, there's a lot more work in the business administrative sector than there is in the legal fiels, which means you would be taking a step backwards.

Also, there's nothing wrong with having a certificate from Rutgers university, since everyone knows who they are.
