Some good skills would include knowledge of the specific system that company uses to process its payroll - we use a system called PayPlus. If you know your way around the system there will be less time spent on training. If you are aware of the different types of payroll reporting such as standard wages, commission, salary (and certified payroll reports regarding OCIP work - this is a whole diff. topic) this will be helpful...

Also knowledge of state/federal laws regarding wage compliance, child labor laws, exemptions and even information regarding taxes.

It's good to have general knowledge of the industry you will be providing payroll for and great customer relation skills (you will spend much of your time on the telephone dealing with clients).
