I'm with CHase and our sales goals include mostly and obsessively checking accounts. My branch tries to open up at least one per banker per day. It doesn't sound hard unless you realize that everybody in the branch already has one... so to find seven to ten people a day between us bankers who have, lets say, Bank of America, and try to get then to switch isn't as easy as you'd hope.
We are paid somewhat well for activated credit cards. Roundabout 25bucks for each customer who pays two bills online with you. You don't really get paid on checking but you get 15bucks per direct deposit activated. 100bucks for a customer with a mortgage purchase. Couple hundred if one of your customers refinances. $1.00 per $1000 invested.
