I prefer canon than nikon because of the quality of image, especialy in high iso. I have been as A photographer over 18 years and love both cameras but in low light condition canon is better.
Canon 40D is good for you. its awesome camera and value for money

I have been a pro photographer for over 30 years. A Nikon is a fine digital professional camera. Nikon's D300 is finest camera I have ever used. I have used Cannon but the D300 has features that Cannon does not have and the ability to use lenses and accessories from the 1980s to now is a real plus. As a profession you want a camera that will not handicap you and you can grow with it. Lens: A good first lens to start with would be a Medium Wide Angle to Telephoto AF Zoom Nikkor 28-70mm f/2.8 ED- IF-AS. Later you can add your wide angle Zoom and telephoto zoom. Save up your money and start off correctly, you will not be sorry with this setup.

Tip: become an assistant fastest way to learn the logistics of the industry..
Good luck,

Eugene

Go with the D-90 for a few bucks more. It is worth the money spent.
