I applied to a PTA program. I had to write an essay describing my required observation hours in Physical Therapy facilities, and also had to write about my impression of the field, how I see myself in it, and why I would be good in it.

How important is this essay in regards to being accepted into a program? Do they really focus on it or even read it? Or do grades from high school and college transcripts mean more?

It's a critical piece of your application. They want to see your written communication level. Also, it is a way to see if you can follow simple instructions, (like the margin & font settings they request & how many paragraphs or pages that want) that sort of thing. Good luck to you!!

Never assume any piece of your application isn't important, because in truth you just don't know what they will prioritize during the review process. I would write your letter assuming it is the most important part of the application...
