Hello there,

I am seeking the advice, thoughts, and opinions of experienced PTAs. I am currently making education/career choices, and I am considering entering the 2-year PTA program at my local college. I would appreciate hearing the thoughts and perspectives of people who work or have worked in the field, or who have insight into the work of a PTA.

I have many questions, and I would love advice on any and all of them...e.g.: Is the job demanding and high-stress, or more relaxed? What are the most important elements of the career, both positive and negative, to be aware of?
- Are there particularly taxing aspects of the work - heavy lifting, moving/assisting severely debilitated patients, memorization, etc.?
- How much independence and responsibility is given to the PTA, versus how they operate beneath the PT?
- Is the setting confining or depressing in any way, or is it more enjoyable?
- Does the job give you room to explore and enjoy other things during your time out of office, or does the stress of the job carry over beyond the working hours?

At the core of my consideration of the PTA program is a deep love for people, and a desire to help and serve others. However, I'm not the best at working in high-stress, confining, or depressing situations. All of your comments and insights are welcome and much happreciated. Thank you!

Same here as the above. I just changed my program to PTA, but there is an approx 3 year waiting list. I hear that the program is very intense, but I have the desire to learn. I've done a few research on the forum and learned a few things:

1. There are many petite women in the field that have said there is not much heavy lifting (in outpatient, at least).
2. Its not as fast-paced as many other careers, but it is because you have to have patience with your patient.
3. I've read that many people in this field have enjoyed their career as a PTA.

More information from others would be great!
