Can what a dental hygienist does be considered "direct patient care"?

I'm working on a BS in dental hygiene, but am starting to consider physician assistant as a career instead. Most PA programs require at least 2000 hours of paid clinical experience, preferring direct patient care jobs like nursing, paramedic, physical therapists, etc. Would dental hygiene be considered in that? I realize it's unlikely, but I'd rather not have to change paths now. Also, if it isn't, what would be my best bet? I'm leaning towards paramedic, but like I said don't really want to back track now. Thanks in advance for any comments!
