Hi, AAO --

I had an interview at Downstate on the 16th. My interview was with two people (both faculty, one of whom I think was the PA program director) and was very thorough but very relaxed because the interviewers really put me at ease. I've only done interviews at two schools so far, but I felt the best about this one.

The topics of the short-answer written essays were (1) what do you think is the biggest issue in health care today (or something like that) and (2) diagram a single drop of blood from the right ventricle to the right atrium. I actually drew it, so I hope they could follow it, as I'm not much of a freehand artist.

Hope this helps. When is your interview??

Hi Melissa,

They are very nice! The interview is relaxed. There are two interviewers. They ask all the typical questions. How you would respond if you found out a class mate was cheating?, The most challenging situation you found yourself in and how you dealt with it? Why do you want to be a PA? etc.

I was wondering Are you a New york state resident? and what is Downstates reputation as a school (PA)?

Hi Debra,

No I am not, I will have to reclocate if I got accepted. Thank you so much for our advice. I am not too sure of their reputation however I know that they have a good medical school and they have been around for a while. Do you remember what the written portion of the interview was like? I am afraid they will ask me a natural sciences question and it may be something I learned so long ago that I won't remember! Thanks again )

I'm in class with a guy that's shadowing now...he said he met the PA while volunteering a local hospital. It seem like you have to just take a chance and ask. That's what I'm going to do.

Hi Stacy,

What date did you submit your application? I did shadow a PA, but only after I submitted my application. You could call the PA dept. and ask to speak with the program director or coordinator and see if he/she will explain what you could do to strengthen your application for next year.

Sounds like you are trying to gain an unfair advantage by trying to find out what the interveiw questions before hand.
These questions are used during the interveiw process and not given out beforehand. Becareful, this is a public forum, and am sure many Downstate officals check this site too. Some of you have given your names and interveiw dates and am sure it wouldnt be too hard to figure you who you are.
Best bet is to prepare and speak about your experience and qualifications. If you are spending your timing trying to gain proir knowledge of the essay questions, am sure your interview wont last long anyway.

Stacey,

Here's some tips.

Attend multiple information sessions. Go to show your face, even if you dont have any questions.

Get good reference letters

They wont accept you unless you have all the prerequistes complete and all your grades in.

If you didnt have those grades in, then will be get rejected because someone else had those grades in.

Fix up your personal essay, that critical. Dont worry about your grades. Everyone has the same grades you have.

I am so much interested in SUNY down state pa program but could not get in this year . I received a rejection letter probably because I had a biology course not graded at the time of application. I need to get in next year but nervous of the GPA that I should maintain to be accepted. If anyone knows what is the GPA that one must maintain plese reply.

Uh, I think, the point was to draw the entire circulation -- RV to PA to lungs to PV to LA to LV to aorta to systemic circulation to vena cava to RA. Showing circulation from the right atrium to the right ventricle would have been very short indeed. And, yes, I was accepted. But thanks for asking.

Hi to all,
I am preparing to satisfy all my prereq classes, besides the high GPA one should really want to be in the medical field and feel passionate about helping and making a difference in other peoples lives. I would like to ask anyone who would know if TOURO college bs/ms program is the better then DOWNSTATEs. I know its a lot more expensive but is the education the same? Does it matter what school you graduate from?

for me Downstate is the better deal Touro stdent always seems to come out handicapped they are very good with geratrics but average overall ,but I guess that is not fair to Touro all schools are basically the same it is up to the individual.

Hello,
I recently had an interview with Touro College in BAyshore, NY. THis has been my 5th interview so fr, and it actually was very different. USually the schools give you a tour around the school give you time to speak with present students, and then you get the interview. The Interview at Bayshore wa sjust an interview. It was very relaxing the interviewers were very nice and made me feel at ease to be myself. So I recieved two days later, a response that I was accepted! I really was fairly shocked as to how quick this process went compared to the other schools. I have been doing my research on the school , and have seen Alot of scruitiny regarding the school being under investigation for its participation in recieving bribes from students to change grades and falsify degrees. I AM really skeptical about this school.I wanted to know if anyone who went to or knows someone who went to this school can give me some honest advice! This is my second time applying to PA school, and I really didnt know what I was going to do if I didnt get into a school thi stime around. And now that I finally get in, it just seems funny. I dont want my ambition to cloud my judgemnet , especialy since I havent heard any good things about the Bayshore Touro PA program, and I am very vey nervous. i wa stold I have only 4 weeks to respond, and I havent heard from the other 10 schools I applied to yet. What should I DO???

Hey,
I was wondering, when you are asked to answer an essay question at the Physician Assistant interview at Suny Downsate, how much time are you given to answer each question

i was surprised that they made me write the essay before the interview, i was expecting it to be afterward like i was told. 50min for both essay, i run out of time. :( the topic were tough. both interviews were faculty, one was friendiler, but both were nice toward the end. pretty typical quetions: why PA, why downstate, strength and weakness, challenging situation, academic strength, leadership experience, hobbies. goodluck everyone.

Good afternoon to all,
I just found out that we will probably be relocating from Houston to NYC for my boyfriend's job. I am almost done with my bio and psych degree here in Houston and was planning on applying to a PA program here...but I am forced to find other options. I found SUNY PA program online and was wondering if anyone knew of their acceptance rate? The PA program I was going to apply for here accepts roughly 35/200 applicants.

And also, I have a 4 yr old son, will it be hard for me to commute to and from his school and mine? I have never been to NY!!!!! And its totally DIFFERENT from Houston :-)

Acceptance rate 35/250 applicants. Have to pay for parking. Subway station three blocks away, but be aware of safety after dark. Not the best neighborhood.

How early can one apply for the 2011 class (I know deadline is Nov. 19th), and have interviews already begun? If so, anyone accepted or when do acceptances typically begin?

If accepted, what is the best area to live in - both safety-wise and distance?

It's hard and don't expect it to be easier than medical school. You can't really have a part time job and attend this program. You also have very short vacations (like with other programs). They say it's like trying to take a sip out of a fire hose. The professors do their best to provide a good education, but the length of the program compared to the amount of knowledge expected to know can frustrate anyone. It's a good program, with good and knowledgeable professors, but there's always the pressure of finding more time to study, so if you are someone who has a life outside such as you are raising your children alone, or need to have a job while you attend school, I would say to not come to this school or most likely any other PA schools because it is harder than you imagine.

Yeah it's a waiting list..if those current accepted students decide not to go, or decide to go to other programs, then the alternates get called. Some people prefer to get a Masters as oppose to a Bachelors so you never know if spots may open up (money may not be a factor). They want financial/medical clearance because you could get accepted a week or two before the program even starts and you need to have all that paper work (immunizations, loans, etc) completed before you start. I sent all those forms in already! Good luck to you too!
